Hempstead, N.Y. -- Sophomore Josh Gillam (Peterborough, Ont.) had a career high five goals and an assist but it wasn't enough as Dartmouth fell to No. 3 Duke, 16-9, before a crowd of 6428 on Mitchel Field in New York. The loss drops the Big Green to .500 at 4-4 while Duke improves to 10-1 on the season.
Sophomore Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) scored the first of his two goals with 9:22 left in the second period to bring the Green within one at 5-4. Zack Greer responded for Duke with three straight goals in less than three minutes and the Blue Devils never looked back. Greer finished the game with seven goals, including the game winner, and an assist.
The Big Green came out strong to begin the game with Gillam scoring the first three Dartmouth goals. Tight defense by both teams made the halftime score a respectable 9-5. Duke came out of the halftime break firing on all cylinders, scoring four unanswered goals to open the third period before Philip Killian (Washington, D.C.) put Dartmouth back into the game with a tally at 2:32. A Brian Koch (Rye, N.Y.) shot went wide but Sussman was able to get the groundball and toss it home to make the score 13-7.
Koch had two assists in the game to keep his scoring streak of 25 games alive. In a relatively penalty-free game the Big Green was two for five on extra man opportunities. Gillam scored both man up goals for Dartmouth. Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) played 58 minutes in goal, stopping 14 shots and taking the loss. Pat Marshall (Lutherville, Md.) came in for the final minutes of the game. Dan Loftus and Rob Schroeder combined for seven saves for Duke.
The Big Green is back in action Saturday, April 5, hosting Ivy rival Penn on Memorial Field in Hanover. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
