HANOVER, N.H. ? It was a heartbreaking game tonight for Dartmouth men's basketball as it took a 50-48 loss to the Yale Bulldogs in Leede Arena.
DeVon Mosley (Mesquite, Texas) scored a team-high 10 points and
Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) grabbed 11 rebounds as the Big Green moves to seventh in the Ivy League, remaining tied with Harvard.
Mosley started the game off strongly for the Big Green, driving to the basket for a layup after pulling down an offensive rebound from a
Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) jumper. Mosley would distinguish himself again not three minutes later, throwing himself at a loose ball as Barnett positioned himself under the Dartmouth net. Gaining control of the ball, Mosley whipped it towards his wide-open teammate. Barnett had all the time in the world to slam the ball into the hoop, making the score 4-2 for Dartmouth with 16:20 left to play in the half.
A distinctive pattern repeated itself throughout the first half. Although the Bulldogs took several opportunities to pull ahead of the Big Green, Dartmouth would respond with a three-point shot to tie the game up each time. Yale's first run, an eight-point streak that let it take its first lead of the game, was stopped dead by a Mosley three-pointer that tied it up at 13. Later, a trey from
Ronnie Dixon (Danville, Ill.) repeated the pattern to tie the game at 21 with three minutes to play.
The routine was repeated a third time as the final minute counted down. This time, however, Dartmouth took a one-point lead as Mosley threw in another three to enter hafltime with the score set at 28-27.
The score remained deadlocked for most of the second half. However, with 5:45 left in the game, Yale opened up a four-point lead that it held as the final minutes ticked away.
With one minute to go, Dartmouth began to foul Yale, sending the Bulldogs to the line. After Yale missed its opportunities at the line, sophomore
Elgin Fitzgerald (Colorado Springs, Colo.) sank a basket to put the Big Green within two points of Yale. Again, the Bulldogs missed their free throw opportunity, and Fitzgerald pulled down the rebound. As both teams took their final timeouts, Dartmouth had one last chance at the net.
Receiving the inbounds pass from Mosley, Barnett took the shot. Unfortunately, Yale swatted the ball away, sending it down the court and out of reach as Dartmouth took the loss, 50-48.
Dartmouth struggled on boards all night, as Yale pulled down 44 rebounds to the Big Green's 26. Yale's biggest contributor was forward Travis Pinick, who came away with an impressive 19 rebounds.
The Big Green will play its final game of the season tomorrow, March 8, against the Brown Bears. Tip-off is set for 7:15 pm. Before the game, Dartmouth basketball will honor its graduating seniors in an on-court ceremony.
