HANOVER, N.H. - Dartmouth men's basketball played the final game of its season tonight in Leede Arena, taking a 75-71 loss to Brown.
Alex Barnett (St. Louis, Mo.) sank a game-high 18 points, while senior
Johnathan Ball (Memphis, Tenn.) pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds in his last collegiate game.
Before the game, Dartmouth honored its graduating seniors, co-captains Ball and
Michael Giovacchini (Salt Lake City, Utah), in an on-court ceremony with President James Wright and athletic director Josie Harper.
Dartmouth struggled on defense throughout the game, as Brown took advantage of backdoor opportunities to break through the Big Green. Head coach and Princeton '83 grad Craig Robinson employed a classic Princeton office to put points on the board for the Bears.
However, thanks to an efficient offensive game, Dartmouth was able to maintain a lead over Brown for much of the first half. Going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, Barnett contributed to Dartmouth's strong offense with a game-high ten points in the first half.
With its point production solid, Dartmouth had to close the holes in its defense in order to pull away. However, Brown continued to play a strong backdoor offense, preventing the Big Green from stretching its lead. With 1:06 left in the half, Brown tied it up with two free throws from Mark McAndrew, and a trey from Damon Huffman gave the Bears their first lead of the game. Although freshman
Clive Weeden (Stow, Mass.) sank a buzzer-beating layup to narrow the gap, Brown ended the half with a one-point lead, 36-35.
Dartmouth got off to a rocky start in the second half, as its one-point deficit had stretched to six after five minutes of play. Although a trey from
Robby Pride (Denver, Colo.) with 10:52 left to play put Dartmouth back to within two, it would ultimately prove to be the closest the Big Green would come, as the Bears pulled ahead once more.
With seven seconds left and Dartmouth down by three, Ball took one for the team and fouled out to send Brown's Peter Sullivan to the line. Missing his first free throw, Sullivan sank the second to put the game out of reach for the Big Green, with the score set at 75-71.
