PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Dartmouth softball team earned a sweep of Brown on Saturday afternoon in Providence. The Big Green scored its winning runs in the sixth inning for both games. In Game One Dartmouth used a three-run sixth to take a 4-3 win and in Game Two a single in the sixth by J.J. Wright (Colleyville, Texas) gave the visitors a 1-0 victory.
In the opening game Brown struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. The Big Green tied it up in the third. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) started things off with a single to right field. She was moved over after Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) ground out to third base with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) doubled to left center, scoring Costello.
The Bears took the lead again in the bottom half of the inning as the two teams remained scoreless for the next three innings. But in the sixth Dartmouth took the lead with three runs off two hits. Clarkson reached on an error by short before a two-out double by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) scored Clarkson. Wright reached on an error by right field and then advanced to second as Kolodziej came around to score. Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) helped moved Wright over with a single up the middle. Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) reached on an error by first base and advanced to second on the throw as Yee advanced to third and Wright scored.
The home team tacked on another one in the bottom half of its inning but the Big Green held on for the 4-3 win. Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.), Kolodziej and Yee all had two hits for Dartmouth while Andrea Browne was tops for the Bears, going 2-for-3. Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) picked up the win for Dartmouth and is now 4-4 on the season. She went the complete game giving up two earned runs while striking out seven. Michelle Moses and Kristie Chin both pitched for the Bears as Moses took the loss. She gave up four runs with six strikeouts as Chin came on to pitch just one inning.
In the second game of the doubleheader the game was scoreless until the sixth inning when the Big Green put the lone run across to take a 1-0 victory. Wright singled in Clarkson who led off the inning with a double as Dartmouth's Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) earned her second win of the season with the complete game two-hit shutout.
