Providence, R.I. - Dartmouth softball (9-18, 5-5) split with Brown (6-19, 1-11) on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader at the Erickson Athletic Complex. The Big Green took the first game, 7-3 as the Bears tallied three runs in the bottom of the fifth in Game Two to earn a 5-3 win.
In Game One Dartmouth had a big sixth inning, plating four as the Big Green notched seven runs on eight hits. J.J. Wright (Colleyville, Texas) started things off with a two-out single to center field. Denise Hasson (Encino, Calif.) came on to pinch run, advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Sarah Bankoff (Lynnfield, Mass.) was the next Dartmouth batter as she walked and both batters advanced on single by Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.). Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) walked in Hasson before a double to center field by Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) cleared the bases.
The Big Green jumped on the board in the second with two runs after Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) both singled before Wright had her first hit of the game to score one. A Brown error allowed Autin to get on base as Kolodziej came around to score.
The Bears responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and one more in the fifth to take a short-lived lead. In the seventh a home run by Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) gave Dartmouth the final score of 7-3.
Clarkson was 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI as Wirght was also 2-for-3 with one RBI. Brittany Lavine was tops for the home team as she went 4-for-4 from the plate with one RBI. Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) began the game in the circle going 3.2 innings with two earned runs and one strikeout before Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) came on in relief, pitching 3.1 innings to earn the victory.
In the nightcap a suddenly red-hot Brown team got three quick runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Big Green answered in the third with two runs after Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) singled with Yee on base. A blast by Parker to center scored both Yee and Chifcian.
In the fifth Dartmouth tied the game as Autin was the first to reach base on an error. With two outs, Autin stole second and then scored on a single by Chifcian. But the Bears would not be denied as back-to-back singles put runners on in the bottom of half of the same frame. A walk loaded the bases as Lindsay came on in relief. Another walk scored Lindsay Rice before a single to left center scored Amy Baxter as Brown won its first Ivy League game of the season.
The Big Green are back in action on Saturday and Sunday, April 19 and 20 hosting Yale in another Northern Division weekend. Saturday's games will begin at 1:00 while Sunday's doubleheader will be played at 12:00 pm.
