NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Dartmouth men's tennis team gave the Yale Bulldogs a run for their money on Sunday, April 20, but ultimately fell 4-3 in a grueling back-and-forth match.
The Green got out to an early lead by winning the doubles point.
Jeffrey Schechtman (Highland Park, Ill.) and
Mark Brodie (Greensboro, N.C.) dominated at the No. 1 spot, as did
Curtis Roby (New York, N.Y.) and
Ari Gayer (Hollis, N.Y.) at No. 3.
Dartmouth went up 2-0 with a win at No. 3 singles when the Yale player retired from competition against sophomore
Justin Tzou (Cupertino, Calif.) However, the Bulldogs started their comeback with wins at No. 2 and No. 4 in straight sets. A solid victory by Roby at No. 6 put the Green back up 3-2.
With just Gayer and Brodie left on the courts, Dartmouth had two chances to clinch the match. Unfortunately, Gayer could not hold off his Yale opponent, bringing the score to 3-3. Playing his third set, Brodie lost the serve early on, but came back to tie the match 5-5. Yale pulled ahead again, but Brodie fought off several match points to bring the match to 6-6 and a tie breaker. Brodie started off the breaker in style, and eventually was up 6-5, but was unable to convert. Brodie was not able to hold off the next match point by his Yale opponent and lost the set 8-6, with the final score set at Yale 4, Dartmouth 3.
The Green will face Harvard on Wednesday, April 23 in its final outing of the season.
