Dartmouth Softball Drops Nonconference Game to Boston College

HANOVER, N.H. ? Boston College (25-26) popped a grand slam home run in the fifth inning, breaking what had been a pitchers' duel to take a 7-3 victory over the Dartmouth softball team in a nonconference game on Wednesday afternoon at Sachem Field.

Through the first three innings Allison Gage in the circle for the Eagles had allowed just one hit while Stephanie Trudeau (Spokane, Wash.) for the home team had given up four with neither side scoring a run. The Big Green got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth before Taylor Peyton's bases clearing long ball in the fifth broke the game open for BC.

Boston College connected for the first hit of the game but stranded its two runners in the first inning. In the Dartmouth first Katie Chifcian (Fullerton, Calif.) reached after being hit and moved to second on a single by Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) through the left side but the Big Green's two runners stayed where they were as the two teams were scoreless after one.

Chifcian became Dartmouth's lead runner again in the fourth after reaching first on an infield single and then stealing second. She put the home team up by a run after crossing the plate on Leigha Clarkson's (Perris, Calif.) double to right center field.

Two sacrifice bunts by the Eagles in the fifth had the go-ahead run on second before a walk loaded the bases for BC. But with Taylor Peyton's one swing of the bat, a grand slam home run off the left field fence cleared the bases giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead.

Another base runner in the fifth had Dartmouth trying to get one back but the Big Green left her at second.

The Eagle stacked on one more in the top of the sixth after a single, an error and a walk loaded the bases for pinch hitter Alison Kooistra, who's bloop to right field brought one across. A hit batter scored another run as the visitors took a 6-1 lead. The Big Green defense came alive for the next two batters with a strikeout and play at the plate on a wild pitch. Boston College plated another one after a single through the right side but a ground out ended the inning with the visitors leading, 7-1.

Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) led off the sixth with a walk and moved to second on a fielders choice play as Costello and Chifcian were at first and second with no outs. Both runners moved over on a groundout before a bases clearing double by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) gave Dartmouth two more back.

Despite a hit by Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh the Big Green was unable to score anymore as the Eagles took a 7-3 victory.

Dartmouth (11-23) will be back in action this weekend with a home-and-home Ivy League series against Harvard. On Saturday the Big Green travels to Cambridge for a 2:00 pm doubleheader with the Crimson before heading home to Sachem Field on Sunday at 2:00 pm for the final Ivy League doubheader of the season.
