CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - With a pair of wins, the Dartmouth softball team earned a sweep of the Harvard Crimson for just the second time in school history. Even though the Crimson has already clinched the Ivy League Northern Division Title the Big Green made its point by coming back in both games of Saturday''s doubleheader at Harvard's Soldier Field, improving to 13-23 on the season, 9-10 in the Ivy League. The losses drop Harvard to 22-20, 12-6 Ivy. Both sweeps by the Big Green has come under head coach Christine Vogt.
Harvard starter Shelly Madick was perfect through the first four innings of Game One as the Crimson recorded its first run of the game in the bottom of the opening frame. But behind a seven-run inning in the fifth the Big Green stormed back tacking on another run in the seventh for the 8-3 victory.
Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) started Dartmouth's big inning with a double to left center and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.). Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) singled to left field, scoring Parker. Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) in her first game since being injured against Penn, singled down the right field line as Kolodziej advanced to third. Denise Hasson (Encino, Calif.) came on to pinch run for Gleason as J.J. Wright (Colleyville, Texas) the next batter, walked. Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice as Kolodziej scored and Hasson advanced to third with Wright out at second. Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) brought another one home with a single as Madick was replaced by Margaux Black. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) then reached on an error by third base as Yee scored unearned. Katie Chifcian (Fullereton, Calif.) continued her streak of garnering big hits with a triple to right center, scoring Costello and Autin. In Parker's second at-bat of the inning a single to left field scored Chifcian for the last Dartmouth run of the frame.
A double by Chifcian in the seventh scored one more as Harvard mounted a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the same inning but it was not enough as the Big Green walked away with the win.
Chifcian was 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs while Parker also recorded two hits with one run and one RBI. In the circle Angela Megaw (Bomoseen, Vt.) picked up her sixth win of the season going the complete game with two strikeouts.
Dartmouth continued its hot bat with several hits through the first two innings of Game Two but it was Harvard that scored first with back-to-back-to-back singles with two outs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 2-0.
The Big Green took the lead in the sixth after Costello doubled to right center scoring Autin to lead off. Then a one-out single by Parker moved Costello to third before Clarkson singled through the left side scoring Costello. Gleason ended the scoring with a double that plated two more.
A Melissa Schellberg single up the middle got one back for the Crimson as the BIg Green's lead was cut to one. In the top of the seventh Dartmouth tried to get its cushion back but would strand Costello at first.
Harvard started its half of the seventh by getting a runner on and moving them to second on a sacrifice bunt. Then an intentional walk to Lauren Murphy had two on with two outs but a popup ended the inning and gave Dartmouth the win and the sweep.
Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) earned her fifth win of the season with her sixth complete game. The freshman pitcher struck out four on the day. At the plate Clarkson was the only Big Green batter to record more than one hit, going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Dartmouth scattered six hits over the seven innings.
The Big Green and the Crimson will meet tomorrow for a 2:00 pm doubleheader at Dartmouth's Sachem Field. Two Big Green seniors will be honored before the game as Dartmouth will play its final contest of the season.
