HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth men's basketball team released its 2008-09 schedule while also naming Jarrett Mathis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Robby Pride (Denver, Colo.) as the captains chosen to lead the squad next year.
Mathis, a 6-8 forward, has been plagued by knee troubles since early in his sophomore year. After surgery and rehabilitation it looked like Mathis was going to have a chance to play his junior year but persistent problems forced him to have more work done on the knee as he saw time in just one game. He has played in 10 games for his career.
"Jarrett is extremely well-respected by both the coaches and his teammates," said head coach Terry Dunn. "He's shown himself to be a mentor to the younger players as well as a hard-worker and that speaks volumes. His passion and commitment to play is unbelievable and I think he's well-respected because of that."
Pride is a dual-sport athlete at Dartmouth as he was a member of the 2008 men's lacrosse squad. The 6-1 guard won the team's Alvin F. "Doggie" Julian Award for spirit and enthusiasm in both his freshman and sophomore campaigns. The junior has played in 44 career games with 105 points.
"Robby's work ethic, attitude and exuberance were part of what helped him be named a captain," Dunn said. "He understands what he needs to do to play this game and he's got a real passion for winning. Robby has realized that to get the playing time he wanted he would need to work hard and he's done that. Both Robby and Jarrett's commitment has been unbelievable and I think they will make terrific leaders for us next season."
The Big Green will start the year off traveling to Army and Providence College before returning home to open up with three games at Leede Arena. Colgate, Marist and Lehigh will all make the trip to Hanover in late November.
A visit to Vermont on December 2 before home games against Plymouth State and Quinnipiac will be played before the winter break. Dartmouth's big trip will be to Berkeley, Calif. and the Golden Bear Classic. The Big Green, Portland and Air Force will join host UC Berkeley on Dec. 27 and 28.
A second game against Army at home on Jan. 3 with contests against Stony Brook and UNH will be the final preparation contests as the Big Green launches into its Ivy League season against Harvard on Jan. 10 and Jan. 24. The last weekend of Jan. has perennial powers Princeton and Penn making the trip to the Upper Valley before another home weekend against Brown and Yale.
Dartmouth
takes to the road for the rest of Feb. with weekend stints against
Columbia, Cornell and Penn, Princeton. The final home games of the
season will be against Cornell and Columbia on Feb. 27 and 28 before
the Big Green wraps up the regular season at Yale and Brown.
