HANOVER, N.H. - Former Dartmouth track and field standout Mustafa Abdur-Rahim '04 finished third in the decathlon at the Thorpe Cup, which pits the United States against Germany at the R.V. Christian Track Complex on the campus of Kansas State University.
Abdur-Rahim concluded the two-day event with a total of 8,175 points and was the day one leader with 4,184 points. After finishing second in three of the first five events during day one, he broke through with a first place time of 14.15 in the 110 meter hurdles on day two and followed that with a toss of 47.23 meters in the discuss to claim the top spot in the event. However, he was over taken by Norman Muller of Germany who won the decathlon with a total of 8,199 points and Jake Arnold of the United States took second with 8,191 points.
The United States prevailed in the men's decathlon with a 40,093 total points with seven competitors, including five of the top six finishers. On the women's side, Germany squeaked by with a 105-point win with a total of 17, 267 points.
Abdur-Rahim still holds three Dartmouth records, including the Decathlon with 3,937 points, and is in the top five of nine individual events and two relays.
