PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman and local product Pete Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) led the Big Green charge at the Rutgers Invitational, helping Dartmouth place 10th in the 24-team field at 21-over par, just two strokes behind the host school. On Friday, Williamson shot a one-under 70, then followed that up with a solid one-over par performance to finish the tournament even and tied for 11th among the individuals on Rutgers Golf Course.
Seton Hall was the only team to finish under par (-1) to take home the team trophy, one stroke ahead of South Carolina-Upstate which shot even par at 568. Binghamton was just another stroke off at one-over par to place third.
Taking individual honors was Chris Scialo of Towson, who was the lone golfer to break 70 on both days with 68-69 and finish at five-under par. Both Baxter Culler of USC-Upstate and Mike Corbo of Binghamton finished two strokes off the pace.
After finishing the first day in 15th place with a 301 (+17), the Big Green played much better on Saturday with the sixth-best team score of the day of 288 (+4). Senior Rob Henley (Longmeadow, Mass.) rebounded from a six-over 77 on Friday to pace Dartmouth with a sparkling one-under 70 and finish the tournament in a tie for 36th at five-over par. One of the golfers he tied with was sophomore Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) who shot rounds of 75 and 72.
As much as Henly improved from one day to the next -- seven strokes -- senior Alex Abate (Augusta, Ga.) showed an even bigger improvement. Abate struggled on day one with an 82 (+11), then stormed back with a 74 (+3) to help the Big Green improve five places in the final standings.
Freshman Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) was the fifth participant for Dartmouth, shooting 79-78 to finish the tournament at 15-over par.
Williamson was the tournament's most consistent golfer by shooting par on 30 of the 72 holes, more than any other participant.
The Big Green will be back in action next weekend when they host the Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.
