HANOVER, N.H. -- Although Bryant won the Dartmouth Invitational with a terrific group effort, freshman Pete Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) carried the Big Green to a second-place finish by shooting a five-under 66 on the final day at Hanover Country Club. Combined with his 72 yesterday, Williamson led all golfers at four-under par, four strokes ahead of the Bryant's Scott Congdon.
Trailing Dartmouth by six strokes entering the final round, Bryant was able to overtake the top spot thanks to a pair of 69s on Sunday by Congdon and Jason Thresher, the latter of whom rebounded from an 80 on the first day. As a team, Bryant posted the best round of the tournament at three-over on Sunday.
But neither Congdon nor Thresher had the second-best score of the day after Williamson. That honor went to Big Green junior Dave Putney (Unionville, Conn.) who came into the clubhouse with a three-under 68. Unfortunately for Dartmouth, he was entered solely as an individual, so his score did not count toward the team effort.
Sophomore Davis Mullany repeated his two-over 73 from Saturday to place third for the tournament at four-over par. Putney tied for fourth along with Tom Ursa of Central Connecticut State and Dartmouth senior Alex Abate -- also playing as an individual -- at six over.
The Big Green travels to Ithaca, N.Y., next weekend to play in the Cornell Invitational.
