PRINCETON, N.J. ? Rebounding from a loss on Saturday the #20 Dartmouth men?'s hockey team defeated #8 Princeton, 4-0 on Sunday afternoon. Dan Markowitz (Jericho, N.Y.) scored his first of the season while Andrew Owsiak (Moose Jaw, Sask.) potted two empty netters to seal the win.
Freshman netminder Jody O'Neill recorded his second shutout of the season with 41 saves, his fourth 40+ save contest this year. The victory in Princeton's Hobey Baker Rink is the Big Green's first since 2003-04.
Dartmouth's (9-5, 6-3 ECAC) first power play opportunity just two minutes into the period resulted in the Big Green testing netminder Zane Kalemba early with five shots on net.
Scott Fleming (Plainfield, Ont.) almost got his team on the board with a point-blank shot but Kalemba came up huge with the save.
The Big Green struck first with 3:10 left in the frame. Markowitz got the puck at center ice from Adam Estoclet (Orono, Minn.). The defenseman brought it down shooting on Kalemba's right side as Troy Mattila (Rockford,Ill.) and a Princeton (13-3, 8-2 ECAC) defender were both there to get a stick on it as it slid across the line.
Starting the second period Princeton pressured Dartmouth goalie Jody O'Neill (Nepean, Ont.) but the rookie was up to the task as he stopped everything the Tigers threw at him.
Doug Jones (Marietta, Ga.) gave the visitors a two-goal lead after he took a Connor Goggin (Glen Ellyn, Ill) on the circle and fired over Kalemba's shoulder. Joe Gaudet (Etna,N.H.) also earned an assist.
Owsiak and Evan Stephens (Bessemer, Mich.) tried to team up for a third goal but Kalemba stopped them short.
The Big Green penalty killers were up to the task late in the period when four straight penalties had Dartmouth on its heels.
Brandon Kushniruk had a short-handed opportunity with less than 5:00 to play but after skating in one-on-one with O'Neill the Big Green netminder made a kick ave that prevented the goal.
Owsiak sealed the game with two empty net strikes as Kalemba was pulled with 2:18 left in the contest. Kalemba finished with 26 saves.
Dartmouth will be on home ice next weekend with two more ECAC Hockey contests as Yale and Brown travel to Hanover. Game time on both Friday and Saturday will be at 7:00 pm.
