HANOVER, N.H. - Sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) tallied two goals to lead the Dartmouth field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Columbia in brutal weather conditions on Homecoming.
Dartmouth (7-7, 3-2 Ivy) got the goals from Hood on penalty corners with the assists on each goal going to junior co-captain Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) and junior Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) Freshman Jenna Stearns (Thornton, N.H.) earned her first start of her collegiate career and made three saves to get the win.
Columbia's Maggie O'Connor scored the lone goal for the Lions in the second half with the assist going to Gabby Kozlowski. Christine O'Hara got the start in net for Columbia and made four saves and she was relieved by Erin Conway in the second half and Conway posted two saves.
In terrible and rainy conditions, the teams played a scoreless first half as the Big Green outshot the Lions, 6-1, with most action being played in the center of the field.
In the second half, Hood pushed Dartmouth onto the board with the first of her two goals in the game on a penalty corner coming 1:56 into the second frame. It was a basic penalty corner for the Big Green and Hood capitalized on a nice high shot over the goaltender for the lead.
Columbia (6-7, 1-3 Ivy) fired back to tie the game with 22 minutes remaining in the game on nice diving play from O'Connor. Kozlowski had her initial shot blocked and O'Connor was able to jump on the rebound and made an incredible play to even the score at 1-1.
Dartmouth, however, didn't panic and once again the reliable Hood scored on another penalty corner. It was Peisch to McHenry, then to Hood and she fired a shot through traffic, which was almost stopped by a Lion defender, but found the net.
The Big Green outshot Columbia by a total of 17 shots to six and posted nine corners to eight for the Lions.
Dartmouth will be back in action in a midweek matchup at Massachusetts on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
