BOSTON – The Dartmouth field hockey team opened its season at Boston University on Sunday, and Amelie Luessmann netted the first goal of the year for the Big Green in a 5-1 loss.
The opening minutes were a battle for possession, with both teams trading control for the first five minutes without generating a shot. BU broke through in the sixth minute, putting two shots on goal during its first real offensive push. Senior goalkeeper Kylie McKinley came up big, coming off her line for two back-to-back diving saves, but a penalty in the Dartmouth circle set up a Terrier penalty stroke that found its mark, putting BU up 1-0.
Dartmouth answered off the ensuing possession, pushing the ball downfield for Campaño's first shot of the match, which was blocked. McKinley made several more saves through the rest of the quarter to keep it a one-goal game, but BU found the net again before the horn to make it 2-0. The period closed with Dartmouth successfully defending a penalty corner in the final minutes.
The Big Green came out of the first quarter looking to make an impact offensively. BU earned its second penalty corner of the match just two minutes in, but McKinley and the Dartmouth defense turned it away. After several minutes of back-and-forth possession, BU converted its third penalty corner into a goal. A wave of substitutions injected new energy into the Dartmouth attack, and first-year Lucy Langlands fired her first collegiate shot in the seventh minute, though it was blocked. Dartmouth then snuffed out a BU rush behind another flurry of McKinley saves; the rush led to yet another Terrier penalty corner, where McKinley made one more stop and defender Ruby Walsh came up big on the goal line, denying a shot that threatened to make it 4-0 before the half.
Dartmouth carried an offensive mindset into the second half, opening the third quarter with its longest stretch of possession yet — four straight minutes in the attacking zone. First-year goalkeeper Julie Seth made her collegiate debut in net to start the half. BU tested her early with two quick shots, both off target. Dartmouth kept the pressure on, Gemma Franco drew a save from the BU goalkeeper, and the Big Green earned their first penalty corner of the match, though Campaño's shot was blocked. A long possession later produced a second penalty corner. Langlands got her second look of the day, forcing BU keeper Sophie Ortyl into another save, and Seth recorded her first collegiate save in the 11th minute before making a second stop on a BU penalty corner. BU capped the quarter with a goal in the final seconds, extending its lead to 4-0.
The fourth quarter opened with three straight saves from Seth. After four minutes of contested possession, BU broke through for its fifth goal of the afternoon. Dartmouth kept pushing, generating two penalty corners and three shots on goal in a single minute-long stretch, and closed the match strong with two more shots on net over the final six minutes. With 30 seconds left, Luessmann broke through the BU defense to score the first goal of Dartmouth's 2026 season, and the match ended 5-1 in favor of the Terriers.
Luessmann led the Big Green in goals with one. Campaño led Dartmouth in shots with seven, on five being on goal. Langlands also put a shot on goal in her collegiate debut. McKinley and Seth split time in net, each finishing with five saves.
Dartmouth will host its home opener Friday, Sept. 11, against Merrimack at 3 p.m.
