HANOVER, N.H. – Ruby Walsh scored the game's first goal and its last, and the Dartmouth field hockey team held off a late UC Davis rally for a 3-1 win at home on Friday, Oct. 2, at Chase Field.
Walsh found the cage less than six minutes into the game and sealed it with 1:11 remaining, both times on feeds from Riley Dumigan. Amelie Luessmann added the Big Green's other goal in the second quarter, and Dartmouth's defense protected the lead into the final minutes.
Dartmouth put nine of its 12 shots on goal, while UC Davis managed just four shots on goal despite attempting 13 and holding an 8-2 edge in penalty corners. Kylie McKinley played all 60 minutes in net and made three saves.
Walsh finished with two goals on four shots, all of them on goal. Dumigan's two assists led all players, and Luessmann, Dumigan, Lucia Campaño, Ella Bowman and Maria Ariza Solans each put a shot on frame.
Walsh struck first at the 5:20 mark of the opening quarter, converting Dumigan's pass for a 1-0 lead. The Aggies pushed back on a pair of penalty corners midway through the period, but McKinley made a save and the follow-up rang off the post.
Luessmann doubled the advantage with an unassisted goal 3:30 into the second quarter. UC Davis earned back-to-back corners late in the half, but one shot was blocked and the other went wide.
The third quarter belonged to the goalkeepers. The Aggies' keeper stopped Campaño, then denied Walsh and Dumigan on a Big Green corner in the final seconds of the period to keep the deficit at two.
UC Davis broke through with 5:24 remaining, scoring off a corner sequence to make it 2-1. McKinley made a save moments later, and Bowman was stopped on the other end following a Dartmouth corner. The Aggies pulled its goalkeeper with 2:48 left in search of the equalizer, but Walsh delivered the clincher on Dumigan's feed to put the game away.
