ORONO, Maine – The Dartmouth field hockey team battled Maine but fell 1-0 at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex on Sunday, Sept. 20. Goalkeeper Kylie McKinley turned in another strong effort in net for the Big Green, finishing with seven saves, while Dartmouth tied the shot count with the Black Bears, 9-9.
In the first quarter, both teams battled for control as neither side found the back of the cage. Ruby Walsh and Lilly Venezia each tested Maine's goalkeeper early, while McKinley answered with a save of her own to keep the game level. The second quarter played out much the same way, with McKinley turning away a Black Bear shot and another off a Maine penalty corner as the teams went to the half tied at 0-0.
The Black Bears came out of the break with the game's deciding sequence. Maine strung together three penalty corners in the third quarter, and after McKinley denied two consecutive shots by Maine, the Black Bears found an opening and scored the first goal of the game at the 35:51 mark to put Maine on top, 1-0.
Down a goal, the Big Green looked for an equalizer in the fourth quarter. Dartmouth earned a penalty corner of its own through Riley Dumigan and got a pair of late chances from Lucia Campaño, but they couldn't find the back of the net. Dartmouth pulled McKinley for an extra attacker in the closing minutes; despite their best effort, the Big Green could not equalize the score and the defense closed it out for the 1-0 result.
