Hanover, N.H. - Senior midfielder Ali Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) was gunning for it all evening and finally came through in the 103rd minute to send the Dartmouth women's soccer team past Princeton, 2-1 in double overtime.
Hubbard, who scored her first goal of the season tonight, helped the Big Green move to 5-4 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League. Princeton, defending Ivy Co-Champs, dropped to 3-6-1, 0-2 Ivy.
Dartmouth outshot Princeton, 17-12, in the steady rainfall at Burnham Field, marking the first time all season that Princeton has been held to fewer shots than its opponent. The Big Green had plenty of great chances late in regulation and in overtime, but Princeton keeper Alyssa Pont made six saves in the second half and three in overtime (11 total) to keep her team in the game.Dartmouth keeper Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) withstood Princeton's eight-shot first half with five saves and also made a diving stop in overtime for six total.
The Tigers managed to strike first when Caitlin Blosser slipped a header in off a free kick from Stephanie Iantorno in the 14th minute. Dartmouth made sure that the Tigers' momentum was short-lived and mounted a counterattack. The Big Green earned three corner kicks in a two minute span, but Pont saved the only shot on goal, a good look from senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.). Just minutes later, however, Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) picked up her fifth goal of the season in the 27th off a cross from senior Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.), who got a feed from Sarah Bromley (La Jolla, Calif.) to tie it at 1-1.
Princeton countered with a flurry of its own, including two quick corner kicks and three shots that were saved by Hogan including a hard one-on-one shot by Kalie Bartholomew in the 34th. Both teams tried to continue capitalizing on the slippery conditions and Princeton ultimately outshot Dartmouth, 8-3 in the half.
Dartmouth opened the second half with a steady momentum and O'Dea had a great chance for her second goal in the 50th minute when she beat her defender in the box, was taken down, got back up but a Tiger was there to meet her shot. In the 73rd, Poskin made a run to the right side and fired a shot that Pont managed to save. Princeton immediately countered and Jen Hoy made a dangerous run into the box where Dartmouth sophomore Erin Fleischli (San Mateo Calif.) made a fearless, clean slide tackle to stop the play.
The Big Green only got stronger as the game went on, outpacing the Tigers with a furious attack in the final 15 minutes of regulation. O'Dea had a couple of good looks late including a one-on-one with Pont, who took her down but there was no call in the box. Hubbard pressed up from her defensive midfield spot in the 87th and fired a shot that Pont saved. The Green held an 8-2 shot advantage in the second half.
Dartmouth dominated play in both overtimes, outshooting Princeton, 6-2. Melisa Krnjaic (Washington, D.C.) sent a great cross into the box in the 93rd minute but in the wet conditions two of her teammates somehow missed getting a header on the ball. Princeton's only real chance of overtime was a doozy, when Hoy had a clear look at the goal but Hogan made a fingertip save that led to a Princeton corner that the Tigers kicked out of bounds. There was a furious Green attack in the final minute of the first overtime as Ally Dutton (Granite Bay, Calif.) had her shot blocked and Hubbard's rebound attempt was saved.
While short-lived, Dartmouth controlled the 2:39 played in the second overtime, managing two dangerous shots before Krnjaic stepped in with the corner kick that led directly to Hubbard's winner in traffic.
Dartmouth heads to Yale for a big Ivy showdown next Friday night, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. Currently, the Big Green is the only Ivy team at 2-0 as Harvard and Yale (both 1-0) had their game suspended after a scoreless first half and postponed until Oct. 20.
