New Haven, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision at Ivy foe Yale tonight, outshooting the Bulldogs 14-8.
Yale scored two goals just over a minute apart in the 18th and 19th minutes and hunkered down defensively with the lead as Dartmouth threw everything it had at the Bulldogs, outshooting them 9-2 in the second half.
Dartmouth drops to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in Ivy play while Yale improves to 7-3 and 2-0 Ivy. There are still four weeks of critical Ivy games to play and the Big Green's title hopes are far from dashed.
The Big Green had the upper hand early in the game, with sophomore Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) peppering the Bulldogs in the opening minutes including a shot saved by Yale keeper Ayana Sumiyasu in the 10th minute.
A breakaway ensured that Yale got on the board first, however, when senior Becky Brown struck from the top of the box off a feed from Leslie Perez at 17:24 for a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs wasted little time on the restart, getting another goal just 1:10 later with a give-and-go from Kristen Forster to Miyuki Hino who beat Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) to the right corner, putting Yale up 2-0.
Dartmouth had two more good looks in the half with shots by O'Dea and senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) blocked by the defense to keep Yale ahead at halftime. Hogan made a save against Forster late in the first to prevent any further scoring. The Bulldogs held a slight 6-5 shot advantage in the first.
The Big Green came out swinging in the second but the Bulldogs were able to capitalize on a two goal cushion defensively. O'Dea picked up where she left off, taking three shots in the first 11 minutes of the half including one saved by Sumiyasu. The Yale keeper withstood a dangerous Dartmouth threat in the 67th, making consecutive saves against Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.) and Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) just 30 seconds apart.
Dartmouth ultimately outshot Yale, 9-2, in the second, forcing Sumiyasu to make four saves while Hogan was not tested again. She finished with one save in the game. O'Dea paced the Big Green with seven shots.
O'Dea and Poskin went the distance up front, playing a full 90 as did Sack and sophomore back Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.). Rookie Grace Best (Downingtown, Pa.) and sophomore Ally Dutton (Granite Bay, Calif.) gave the Big Green a solid boost off the bench.
Dartmouth has a quick turnaround before hosting instate rival New Hampshire on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Burnham Field.
