HANOVER, N.H. — Four former Dartmouth Big Green men's basketball players have been chosen for induction in the New England Basketball Hall of Fame — Larry Lawrence '80, Ed Leede '49, Jon Edwards '82 and Gregg Frame '94. The ceremony to honor them and others will take place this Friday, Oct. 9, at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut. Lawrence and Leede were two of the 11 Division I players selected by the Institute of International Sport for their outstanding collegiate careers, while Edwards and Frame are being inducted as two of the 20 Scholar-Athletes.
Nineteenth on the Big Green's all-time scoring list with 1,122 points, Lawrence twice was named Dartmouth's most valuable player. The forward averaged 16.4 points per game as a junior, then had to sit out the following season with an injury. He made his comeback the following year and became the first of just two Dartmouth players to be named the Ivy League Player of the Year, averaging 21.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while earning Associated Press honorable mention All-America honors. Lawrence went on to play in the United States Basketball League and the Continental Basketball Association.
Leede is a Dartmouth legend, becoming the first Big Green hoopster to score 1,000 points in a career with 1,331, a total that went unsurpassed for 23 years. He averaged over 15 points a game for his career, never scoring fewer than 13.7 points per game in any of his four years on the squad. After graduating, Leede went on to play in the NBA for two years with the Boston Celtics, averaging close to eight points, two rebounds and two assists per game. He still ranks ninth all-time in scoring at Dartmouth, and the basketball arena at the college that opened in 1987 is named in his and his family's honor — Leede Arena.
The Scholar-Athletes consist of distinguished individuals who had outstanding careers as players or coaches, who excelled in the classroom and, in the case of players, following graduation, have been highly successful in their careers — and in the case of both players and coaches — have made strong contributions to society.
Edwards enjoyed a fine career at guard, seeing action in 81 games and tallying 671 points for an 8.3 average with 120 rebounds. He captained the team his senior year, earning the Dolly Stark Award (team most valuable player) by averaging 13.7 points per game while shooting at a 52.2 percent clip. After graduating from Dartmouth, Edwards got a law degree from Georgetown and is now President and CEO of Schnee's, an outdoor apparel company.
Frame scored 1,181 points during his Big Green career, 14th all-time at Dartmouth. The Alvin “Doggie” Julian Award winner as a sophomore (for spirit and enthusiasm) and Dolly Stark Award winner as a senior served as team captain during his final campaign, scoring 15.6 points per game while earning first team All-Ivy honors. Frame graduated cum laude from the University of Maine Law School and is a founding member of Taylor, McCormack & Frame, LLC, in Portland, Maine. His practice focuses on labor and employment law, business development and civil litigation.
