HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth field
hockey team outshot Cornell 15-4, but couldn't capitalize on the
advantage as the Big Green fell to the Big Red, 1-0, on Senior Day at
Chase Field.
Dartmouth (9-8, 4-3 Ivy) got two saves from
sophomore goalkeeper Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) and failed to
score for the fifth time this season.
Cornell (10-5, 4-3 Ivy)
moved into a tie with the Big Green in the Ivy standings at third
overall with the win today. Senior Katie Kirnan gave the Big Red a big
win with an unassisted goal in the second half to put Cornell up for
good. Sophomore Alex Botte got the start in net and was impressive with
seven saves, including a couple of game-savers on Dartmouth penalty
corners.
There was little action in the first half as Dartmouth
led in shots at 5-2, while Cornell had two penalty corner opportunities
come its way, but failed to score. The Big Green went without a penalty
corner in the opening half.
In the second half, the game started
to pick up a bit for the Big Green. Dartmouth was awarded five penalty
corners, but couldn't capitalize on them.
Kirnan scored the
game-winner just 1:46 into the second half on a broken down play in the
Dartmouth circle. Cornell was driving into the circle and miss played
the ball, but Kirnan was able to recover and fired a shot that
surprised Vakiener and hit the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Down
the stretch Dartmouth pressured the Big Red with multiple corner
opportunities. Sophomore Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) became the primary
option, but Botte swatted away any chance that Hood gave the Big Green.
Dartmouth finishes the season with nine wins, the most since
2005 and for the second straight year the Big Green finished third in
the league with a 4-3 record.
Dartmouth also honored its lone
senior prior to the game as Chelsea Dodds (Hanover, N.H.) started in
her final game as a member of the Big Green. Dodds played in 35 career
games for Dartmouth and registered four goals, all of which came on
penalty strokes.
