One More Win for Christmas
• In the final game before Christmas Day, Dartmouth will be trying to even its home record at 3-3 against winless Colgate.
• The last time on this floor, the Big Green drubbed Division III Lyndon State by 29 points, 83-54, as four players scored in double figures, led by Jabari Trotter's 16 points.
• In its last game, Dartmouth came up short in a quest for its first road win of the season, falling 69-59 at in-state rival New Hampshire.
• Sophomore David Rufful posted a career-high 18 points while grabbing five rebounds and three steals for the Big Green in the loss.
• Center Matt LaBove took home Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors, averaging 10.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two games last week.
• The Big Green played at UNH without Trotter, who missed the first game of his career due to an injury. His presence on the court is questionable for tonight's game.
• Dartmouth committed a season-low eight turnovers against the Wildcats, and just one in the first half.
Series vs. Colgate
• Both basketball programs debuted in the 1900-01 season, and first met four years later on Dec. 7, 1904. Dartmouth won that contest, 29-19, but Colgate has a slim 18-17 advantage in the series.
• Last year the Raiders defeated Dartmouth in the Big Green's home opener, 65-60, despite trailing by six at the half. Mike Venezia had 14, making three Raiders in double figures.
• This is the 14th consecutive season the two schools have met on the hardwood, with Colgate winning 10 of the 14 games in that time (played twice in 1999-2000).
• Dartmouth is just 2-5 hosting the Raiders in Leede Arena. Its last win here against Colgate came on Jan. 17, 2000, by an 84-68 score.
Scouting the Raiders
• Colgate is still in search of its first win, having lost nine straight to open the season, its worst start in 13 years.
• The Raiders were scheduled to play Texas-San Antonio on Sunday, but the game was postponed due to the heavy snowfall in the Northeast (but not here). No make-up date has been announced.
• The last game for the Raiders came 10 days ago, a 66-55 loss at home to Stony Brook.
• The offense is led by Kyle Roemer and Yaw Gyawu, who are averaging 16.9 and 15.0 points per game.
• Nearly half of Roemer's field goals are three-pointers (27 of 55), and although he is a 6-3 wing, Roemer is Colgate's leading rebounder at 5.2 per contest.
• Gyawu, on the other hand, does his work in the post and is shooting 52.9 percent (55-of-104) for the season.
• Mike Venezia, who led the Raiders in scoring in last year's win over Dartmouth, has been sidelined with an injury since the third game of the year and is not expected to play tonight.
• Colgate struggles at the free throw line, shooting just 63.2 percent as a team.
Ivy League Rookie of the Week
Freshman center Matt LaBove took home the league's Rookie of the Week award on Dec. 21 for his performances in losses at Lehigh and New Hampshire. First he posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds — both season highs — then scored nine points and grabbed six boards against UNH. He averaged 10.5 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 9-of-10 at the foul line. The last Big Green player to be the league's top rookie for a week was David Rufful last season on Feb. 23.
Rufful Has More Than Ridges
Sophomore David Rufful has had a rather up-and-down season (ridges, if you will), but peaked at New Hampshire with a career-high 18 points. The wing took 20 shots, connecting on eight, plus drained his only three-pointer and free throw of the day.
Making the Most of an Opportunity
Prior to the game at New Hampshire on Dec. 20, neither sophomore Kirk Crecco nor freshman Mbiyimoh Ghogomu had seen much action. That changed against the Wildcats as Crecco played a career-high 21 minutes and chipped in four points, while Ghogomu was on the floor for 15 minutes, tallying four points and five rebounds.
Tightening the Turnovers
Taking care of the basketball is a major point of emphasis for head coach Terry Dunn, and it seems his point finally came across against UNH. In the first half, Dartmouth coughed the ball up just once, then finished the game with a season-low eight turnovers, its fewest since a 66-63 win at Princeton last Feb. 21.
Breaking Points
Statisically speaking, there seem to be set minimums that lead to a Dartmouth victory. When the Big Green have shot at least 40 percent from the floor, they are 2-0. More rebounds than the opponent, 2-1. Score at least 61 points? 2-0. The toughest condition to win is opponent scoring — hold the opposition to less than 58 points, 2-0.
