FORT MYERS, Fla. - Dartmouth freshman Molly Khalil (Seal Beach Calif.) helped the Dartmouth softball team open the 2009 season with a victory as the rookie went 3-for-4 with four runs scored as the Big Green defeated Bryant, 8-3 in the first game of the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament. Junior Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) was the hero in Game Two as she singled in the ninth inning to bring the winning run home for a 3-2 victory over St. Francis (Pa.).
Against Bryant, Dartmouth used two runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings to pot eight runs in the victory. Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.), Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) and Parker all had two hits in the game as Parker also scored twice.
In the circle Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) picked up the win going the full seven innings. The sophomore struck out two while giving up just one earned run.
In Game Two the Dartmouth and St. Francis had a 1-1 tie going into the ninth inning when St. Francis was able to plate one in the top of the ninth. Dartmouth stormed back and put three across in the bottom of the frame to win, 3-2.
To start the ninth Autin was placed on second. Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) sacrificed her over before Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) doubled to right field. Khalil put up a sacrifice fly as Clarkson advanced to third. A single by Parker to center field brought Clarkson home for the final run.
Parker was the big player for the Big Green as the junior went 3-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Clarkson was the only other Dartmouth player to pick up a hit. In the circle rookie Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) picked up her first win as the freshman went the full nine innings, striking out seven while allowing just one earned run.
Tomorrow Dartmouth will play two games beginning with an 11:00 am contest with Colgate before taking on host Florida Gulf Coast at 5:00 pm.
