FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Dartmouth softball team won its third game in a row with a 2-0 defeat of Colgate on the second day of the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament. Unfortunately the Big Green dropped the nightcap to host FGCU, 15-1 in five innings.
Freshmen Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) and Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) combined on a 10-hit shutout as Dartmouth improved to 3-0, while Colgate falls to 1-2. Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) and Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) both had two hits in the game as Parker was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Dartmouth scored its first run in the top of the first inning, when Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) reached on a throwing error, and advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Then with two outs, she scored on another Colgate throwing error.
Parker added an insurance run for the Big Green when she led off the sixth inning with a home run.
FGCU continued to score runs in bunches, outscoring Dartmouth and Bryant by a combined score of 29-1 on the second day. A highlight for the Big Green was freshman Molly Khalil's (Seal Beach, Calif.) solo shot in the second inning. Samantha Waldron led the way offensively for the home team with a 2-2 effort, including a grand slam and a solo home run. Cheyenne Jenks also added a solo home run and scored three times. In the circle, Cat McDaniel was the winner for the Eagles as she tossed a two-hit complete game.
Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) and Khalil had the only hits in the game. In the circle Devin Lindsay started the game before being relieved by Barker.
Dartmouth continues at the FGCU tournament with another matchup tomorrow against the Eagles at 11:00 am.
