SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Dartmouth softball team rebounded with a terrific showing against host Sacramento State in the Capital City Classic on Sunday. The Big Green erased a three-run Hornets lead by notching one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead but Sac State came back to plate the game winner in the bottom of the sixth for the 5-4 victory.
In the second inning Dartmouth was down by just a run as freshman Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) started the inning with a lead-off hit and despite Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) moving her to third the Big Green stranded Khalil there.
In the bottom half of that inning the lead runner was on for Sac State as a sacrifice bunt was the first out before freshman pitcher HIllary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) caught the third batter looking for a strikeout but unfortunately the Hornets were able to put another runner on the board.
Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) started things off in the third with the first of seven extra-base hits with a double to left center. She moved to third on a sacrifice but would stay there as the Green was still scoreless.
In the fourth Dartmouth got on the board after Yee reached first on a two-out walk. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) scored Yee with a line drive to right centerfield. Then in the sixth the Big Green scored three runs off three hits as Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) lead off the inning with a line drive double. With one out Parker and Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) hit back-to-back doubles to score two. Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) was able to get to second base on a error by the center fielder as Gleason scored to give Dartmouth a one-run lead.
The Hornets brought home the winning run in the bottom of the sixth after one-out back-to-back hits.
Parker was tops for the Big Green as she went 3-for-4 with one run. Costello, Clarkson, Gleason and Yee accounted for the other Dartmouth hits. Barker went the complete game, striking out three. Dartmouth is now 5-9 on the season.
Continuing with its spring trip, Dartmouth will travel to St. Mary's for a double-header on Tuesday starting at 1:00 pm.
