MORAGA, Calif. ? The Dartmouth softball team split its games against St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon, coming back to top the Gaels, 3-1 in the second contest after dropping the first 3-1. With the split the Big Green moves to 6-10 on the season while St. Mary's improves to 14-15.
Freshman Brittany Linton earned the Gaels' win in the first game of action, pitching six innings and allowing one run.
All three of St. Mary's runs came in the bottom of the third, as Katelyn LaRussa was walked to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt by Sadie Dolcini moved a runner into scoring position before Kayla Gonzales reached on a walk. A single to the shortstop brought in the first run of the day, followed by a double to left field, scoring two more.
Dartmouth made its way onto the scoreboard late in the game, scoring a single run in the top of the seventh. Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) led off with a single and then moved to second on a Leigha Clarskon (Perris, Calif.) single before Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) blasted a double to score Gleason.
Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) took the loss in the circle going the complete game with four strikeouts. The Gaels totaled three runs, four hits, and three RBI, while holding Dartmouth to one run, six hits, and one RBI.
In the second game of the double-header Saint Mary's scored in the first inning, taking advantage of a Big Green error. Unfortunately that was all the run support that the home team would receive as the Dartmouth defense shut the Gaels down with the bases loaded as starter Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) struck out a batter and then forced a ground ball for a double play. Barker never let a runner get past second for the rest of the contest.
Dartmouth scored their first two runs in the top of the third off a single to centerfield, and rounded out their offense with a run in the seventh.
Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) got on base after being hit and then stole second. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) hit a single to move Autin over before Nikki Yee's (Martinez, Calif.) single to centerfield plated both runners.
In the seventh Gleason led off with a double before Barker singled to short scoring Dartmouth's co-captain.
Barker earned the win for the Big Green, improving to 3-4 on the season. The rookie held the Gaels to one run and five hits, while striking out two.
Gleason was 3-for-6 with two runs scored in the double header. Hicks and Costello both racked up two hits.
Dartmouth returns to action at San Jose State on Wednesday.
