TEMPE, Ariz. - Led by two top-10 finishes by junior Ted Lesher (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), the Dartmouth men's track and field team opened its 2009 outdoor season at the Arizona State Invitational on Saturday.
Lesher took home his highest finish at the invite in the triple jump, hitting the pit at 14.43 meters (47-04.25) in the finals to take the fourth position. He followed that performance with a ninth-place time in the 110 meter hurdles, crossing the line at 15.41.
Other highlights for the Big Green came in field events. Junior Michael Poppler (Metarie, La.) competed in the long jump and finished with a mark of 6.99 meters (22-11.25). He actually jumped 6.92 meters (22-08.50) in the prelims and went into the finals in the fifth spot, but dropped to sixth with a better jump in the finals.
Sophomore David Irving (Manchester, N.H.) started his outdoor year with a toss of 48.23 meters (158-03) in the discus to finish in ninth, while classmate Chris Roe (Berwyn, Pa.) threw the javelin for the first time this season and took home the 10th position at 55.93 meters (183-06).
The Dartmouth men will be back on the track this coming weekend as the Big Green travel south for the Princeton Invitational, beginning on Friday.
