HANOVER, N.H. - With a walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth inning, senior co-captain Ashley Gleason (Costa Mesa, Calif.) helped the Dartmouth softball team (13-12, 6-2) to a 7-5 victory over Cornell (27-7, 6-2) in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader on Sunday. The win gave the Big Green a five-game win streak in league play as Dartmouth continues to lead in the Ivy League's Northern Division.
In the nightcap it was a different story as Cornell scored seven runs through the first four innings as the Big Red came back to take Game Two, 10-2 in six innings.
In the opener Dartmouth took a three-run lead over Cornell. Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) began things with a single through the left side. Then with one out Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice as Clarkson moved to second and advanced to third on an error by thrid base. Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) came up and singled up the middle, scoring Clarkson as Autin moved to third. With two gone, Gleason singled through the left side as Autin scored, unearned.
A run by the Big Red in the fourth helped Cornell get one back but a home run by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) in the bottom of that inning gave Dartmouth a three-run lead
The Big Red bats came alive in the top of the seventh as Cornell took a 5-3 lead. Vanessa Leonhard began the inning with an infield single before Alyson Intihar hit a one-out single to advance the runner. Another hit by Devon March scored Intihar and Amiraian. A double to center field by Jessy Berkey brought two more around.
But in the bottom half of that inning the Big Green rallied and tied the game at 5-5. Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) singled up the middle before Clarkson belted a one-out home run to left field.
Despite stringing together hits and threatening in the next couple of innings, Dartmouth was unable to put any runs across as starting pitcher Devin Lindsay (Whittier, Calif.) continued to hold Cornell off.
In the tenth Costello began the inning with a walk as Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt, leading the way for Gleason's second home run of the weekend.
Lindsay went the complete game picking up her fifth win of the season, she recorded six strikeouts in the victory. Elizabeth Dalrymple took the loss and falls to 10-2.
In the second game of the day, Cornell was able to string together seven runs through the first four innings of play as the Big Red knocked starter Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) out of the game. Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.) came on in relief and
In the first inning the Big Green got its first runs as Yee recorded a one-out single up the middle. With two outs Yee advanced to second on a wild pitch before Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) walked. Parker doubled to center field scoring both.
The Big Red got two more runs off a homer by Devon Marsh in the top of the sixth. Barker is now 5-6 on the season as she went three innings with one strikeout. Lauren Marx got the win for the visitors as she improves to 6-1.
Dartmouth will be back in action with a non-conference doubleheader against Sacred Heart on Wednesday. Game time is set for 3:00 pm at Sachem Field.
