HANOVER, N.H. - Led by hitting in the first game and strong pitching in the nightcap, the Dartmouth softball team swept a doubleheader from Sacred Heart in non-conference action on Wednesday at Sachem Field. The Big Green took Game One 8-5 and Game Two, 9-1.
In the opener SHU put one across in the top of the second but Dartmouth came back with two that inning to take the lead. With two outs Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) reached on an error and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) and Clarkson advanced on wild pitches as Clarkson came around to score another wild throw by pitcher Kylie Abrams. Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) singled to second base and then advanced to second on the throw as Barker scored the second run of the frame.
The Big Green put the capper on the day with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Parker singled to left field before Clarkson reached on a fielder's choice. A one-out single up the middle by Barker scored Parker as Clarkson advanced to second. With two outs Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) singled up the middle as Clarkson came around to score. With her second triple of the day Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) brought the final two runners home.
Dartmouth put two more across in the fifth as Sacred Heart was able to get four more in the fourth and fifth innings to make things interesting but the Big Green defense shut down the Pioneers to preserve the win.
Yee, Parker, Barker and Autin each recorded two hits in the game as Yee, Barker and Autin led the team with two RBIs. In the circle Barker went the complete game as she went the complete game with four earned runs and five strikeouts.
In the second game rookie pitcher Kat Hicks (Costa Mesa, Calif.) had a perfect game through four innings and a no-hitter through six as the freshman picked up her third win of the season. Dartmouth put nine runs across, one in the first, four in the third and four in the sixth to end the game early.
Four runs on five hits highlighted the first big Dartmouth inning before four runs on four hits capped the later half of the game. The Pioneers lone run came in the sixth.
At the plate Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) was tops, going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Yee, Gleason, Autin and Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) all added two hits apiece to the 14-hit Big Green total.
Dartmouth continues at home this weekend with a pair of Ivy League doubleheaders against Northern Division foe, Brown. On Saturday the two teams will square off at 1:00 pm while on Sunday, game time is set for 12:30 pm.
