This Time Out: The Big Green heads west on the heels of a great showing at the 2009 Nike Virginia Classic, which Dartmouth won. A pair of intriguing matchups is on tap for Dartmouth, which faces a pair of Pac-10 teams that are off to impressive starts as well. The Big Green defeated Oregon State (5-1) last year in Hanover but the Beavers are on a five-game winning streak this season. Oregon, Sunday's opponent, took its only loss of the season to #4 Portland.
Last Time Out: Dartmouth took home the Nike Virginia Classic title after a 2-0 weekend including wins over Seton Hall and #12 West Virginia. Sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) rebounded from a late loss to San Diego State to backstop the Big Green to a pair of 1-0 shutouts. Hogan and the Dartmouth defense have allowed only two goals so far this season. Senior Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) provided the double-overtime game-winner against Seton Hall, taking a feed from freshman Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.). Against #12 West Virginia, Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif. provided the game-winner in the 56th minute after a nice run and pass from teammate Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.).
Awards Abound: Four Dartmouth players were named to the all-tournament team for their play at the Nike Virginia Classic: seniors Kelsey Quick (Bernardsville, N.J.), Becky Poskin (Leawood, Kan.) and Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) and sophomore back Erin Fleischli (San Mateo, Calif.). Sack was also named the Tournament MVP and earned spots on both the Soccer America and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week. For her efforts with the assist against West Virginia, Quick was named to the CollegeSoccer360.com Prime Time Performers of the Week.
Rookie of the Week: Aurelia Solomon (Washington, D.C.) was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for her efforts in last weekend's sweep. The freshman back came into her own in Virginia, playing a big part off the bench in the victories. She provided the assist on the double-overtime game-winning goal against Seton Hall, sending in a perfect cross for a streaking Poskin to hammer home. She helped keep the Pirates without a shot attempted in 13 minutes of overtime. Solomon bolstered the defense with a 65-minute effort off the bench in the win over West Virginia, helping allow only six second-half shots to keep the Mountaineers at bay.
Next Time Out: Dartmouth is back on the East coast but still on the road at regional rival Boston University on Sept. 24 and at Brown for its Ivy opener on Sept. 27. The Big Green returns home to Burnham Field on Saturday, Oct. 3 against Ivy rival Princeton.
