Corvalis, Ore. - The University of Oregon won its fifth-straight with a 1-0 victory over the Dartmouth women's soccer team this morning.
For Dartmouth, it marked its second loss to a surging Pac-10 foe in as many games, falling to 3-3 while Oregon improved to 6-1-1. Oregon and host Oregon State each went 2-0 at the OSU Nike Invitational.
The teams played a fairly even contest, though the Ducks managed to create more scoring opportunities with 13 shots to the Big Green's four, while each team took four corner kicks.
It took 11 minutes before either team got a shot off in the game, but Dartmouth sophomore Aly O'Dea (Irvine, Calif.) opened things up with an offering that went wide of the Ducks' goal. Dartmouth's backline did its part in the first, as Oregon took six shots total, four of which were blocked by defenders.
The Big Green withstood a dangerous flurry in the 29th minute when the defense blocked a shot by Riana Mansfield before sophomore goalkeeper Colleen Hogan (Houston, Texas) saved the rebound attempt. The teams played to halftime scoreless at 0-0.
Oregon got the only goal it needed in the win just two minutes into the second half. Dani Oster sent a cross into the box and Hogan deflected it, but Oregon's Jen Stoltenberg captured the loose ball and slotted it in from eight yards out.
Dartmouth held off Oregon for the balance of the contest, but could not get the equalizer. Senior Myra Sack (Wynnewood, Pa.) had another impressive outing, leading the team with four shots including one saved and two blocked by Oregon defenders.
The Big Green returns to the East coast and has a full week ahead, traveling to New England rival Boston University for a 7 p.m. battle on Thursday night. Dartmouth has not lost to BU since 2004, with three ties and a Big Green win that came in 2006. Following that, Dartmouth heads to Brown for its Ivy opener on Sunday at 1 p.m.
