CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Dartmouth (5-6, 1-0 Ivy) women's volleyball team opened up Ivy play on Friday, taking three sets to defeat Harvard (4-8, 0-1). The Big Green won 25-15, 25-22, 25-23 to take the early lead in the Ancient Eight standings.
"What a great win," said head coach Ann Marie Larese. "We played very well as a team, we executed all that we had been practing this week. We got the sideouts we needed and our serving just continues to get better."
Senior Megan MacGregor (Carlsbad, Calif.) led Dartmouth with a double-double, 12 kills and 11 digs while sophomore Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led both squads with 16 kills and a .441 hitting percentage. Jessie Hartman (Woodside, Calif.) added 14 digs while three Big Green players had three blocks apiece. Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) was phenemonal in her serving as the sophomore notched five of Dartmouth's eight service aces.
The first set was close early on as the two sides couldn't seem to swing the momentum their way. Tied at 14-14, the Big Green began to pull away and Harvard was never able to get any closer than four points as Dartmouth came away with the 25-16 win.
In Set Two, the Big Green had to play from behind as the Crimson took and early three point lead twice. Dartmouth tied it up at 10-10 before Harvard again took the lead. Eventually the Big Green pulled ahead and stayed there off of Houston's serving six straight points as Dartmouth won, 25-22.
The third set started much like the previous two as neither side seemed to gain much momentum early on. The two sides tied the match eight times before Dartmouth took the lead at 17-16 and continued to outpace Harvard, enroute to a 25-23 win.
The two teams will meet up for a rubber match on Friday, Oct. 2 in Hanover as the Big Green looks to improve its Ivy record to 2-0.
