HANOVER, N.H. – Senior co-captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.) was the bright spot for the Dartmouth women's hockey team as she netted a hat trick and added an assist for four points in the Big Green's 6-4 loss to Colgate on Friday night.
Dartmouth (6-9-2, 4-7-1 ECAC) also got a goal and an assist from senior co-captain Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.), while junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) contributed two assists. Freshman Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) earned the start and posted 17 saves, but didn't make it out of the second period. Senior Mariel Lacina (London, Ont.) relieved Woodcox and pushed aside eight saves in 27 minutes of ice time.
Colgate (7-13-3, 3-5-3 ECAC) got two goals from Katie Stewart and Brittany Phillips and Jordan Brickner each added a goal and an assist for two points. Hannah Milan, Jessi Waters and Evan Minnick each helped out with a pair of assists apiece. Lisa Plenderleith was impressive between the pipes with 45 saves, including 33 in the first two periods alone.
Colgate got things started 6:55 into the first as Brickner gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead. She put a surprising shot on net that Woodcox could not control and it slipped inside the far post. Phillips was given the lone assist as she put a shot on net prior to Brickner's tally.
Parsons netted her first of three on the night to knot the score at 1-1 with 5:47 remaining in the period. She was camped out in the high slot and freshman Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) found her and Parsons connected on a low shot that hit the back of the net.
The Raiders went up for good with 28 seconds left in the opening frame with Jenna Klynstra giving Colgate a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission. In addition to Klynstra's first period goal, the Raiders rattled off three unanswered goals to open the second period and built a commanding 5-1 lead with 5:50 remaining in the second frame.
Dartmouth chipped away with Parsons scoring her second of the night with 1:31 left in the second to cut the lead down to 5-2. Cunningham answered as well, 31 seconds following the Parsons score to make it 5-3. Dartmouth took the momentum into the locker room and had opportunities early on in the final frame, but couldn't capitalize.
Colgate added more insurance as Stewart netted her second of the night to push the lead up to 6-3.
Parsons was able to make it 6-4 in the final minutes with her third goal of the contest and became the second Big Green skater this season to record a hat trick. Cunningham posted the first of the year against these same Raiders back on Halloween.
The Big Green was able to outshoot the Raiders 49-31, but Colgate made its shots count and the six goals allowed by Dartmouth was a season-high. Each team netted a power play goal and Dartmouth went 1-for-6 on the man advantage.
The Big Green will be back at Thompson Arena tomorrow afternoon as Dartmouth takes on Ivy rival Cornell at 4 p.m.
