Starting Ivy Slate with Momentum
• After slogging through a 2-10 start, Dartmouth celebrated the new year with a 49-43 victory over Bucknell on Monday.
• Freshman R.J. Griffin had a breakthrough game, posting season highs in both points (16) and rebounds (7), draining four three-pointers to electrify the Leede Arena crowd.
• The last time the Big Green had won a game when scoring fewer then 50 points came three seasons ago in a 45-44 win at Princeton. And the last opponent to score no more than 43 points was Princeton that same year in a 53-43 Dartmouth win in Hanover.
• As a team, the Green shot 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the floor, just the third time this year they have cracked 40 percent. Not surprisingly, those are their three victories this year.
• As has been the case for the past 22 seasons, Dartmouth will begin its Ivy schedule against the Crimson. The Big Green are 10-12 in those 22 openers, and 5-11 at Harvard.
• Dartmouth is 22-32 in Ivy openers all-time.
• The last time the Green played on this court, they upset Harvard in overtime, 75-66, as Alex Barnett '09 scored 30 points and Marlon Sanders had 14.
Series vs. Harvard
• Dartmouth has a definitive advantage all-time against the Crimson with a 94-74 record, splitting the two games last year. Both games were hotly contested, with Harvard winning by one in Leede, then the Big Green surviving overtime at Lavietes.
• The win at Lavietes last year ended a nine-game losing streak for the Green at the venue. Dartmouth is 11-16 in the building.
• The Big Green have played Harvard fewer times than any other Ivy school save Brown. Those two schools, oddly enough, are the two closest to Dartmouth in the conference.
Scouting the Crimson
• Picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll, Harvard has proven itself in non-conference play with an 11-3 record and victories over William & Mary, Boston College and George Washington.
• The Crimson's three losses have come against two nationally ranked schools — Georgetown and UConn — and a vastly improved Army squad, all on the road.
• Harvard is coming off a two-game, West Coast swing where it knocked off Seattle, 92-71, and Santa Clara, 74-66.
• Senior guard Jeremy Lin has been in the national spotlight with his performances against UConn (33 points) and Boston College (25). Lin has led the Crimson in scoring in 11 of their 14 games and averages 17.4 per contest.
• Entering this week, Harvard was fourth in the country in free throw shooting and is currently converting foul shots at a 76.8 percent clip. Only two players are below 75 percent.
• The Crimson are also shooting 49 percent from the floor, putting them among the top 25 teams in the nation, but just 32.1 percent on threes.
• Keith Wright leads the team in rebounding at 5.1 per game, though Lin is right behind at 5.0 and Kyle Casey grabs 4.6.
Freshman Frenzy
Offense has been in short supply this season for the Big Green, but freshman R.J. Griffin stepped up against Bucknell to lead Dartmouth to a 49-43 victory. The rookie sank 5-of-8 field goals, including 4-of-5 from downtown, to put up a season-high 16 points. On top of that, he hauled in a personal-best seven rebounds as well, doubling his total accrued in the first 12 games. Both the 16 points and the seven boards were nearly one-third of Dartmouth's total in the game (49 pts., 23 reb.).
New Game, New Scoring Leader
In the first 13 games, Dartmouth has had no less than nine different players lead the team in scoring. Freshman R.J. Griffin, with his 16 points against Bucknell, is the most recent addition to the group, following fellow rookie Matt LaBove, who put up 13 points at Quinnipiac. Sophomore Jabari Trotter has topped the Big Green three times, while senior Robby Pride and sophomore David Rufful have done so twice each.
Defensive Shut Down
The Dartmouth defense was critical to the win over Bucknell, holding the Bison to a paltry 30.6 percent shooting for the game, the lowest for an opponent this year. The last Division I opponent to shoot as poorly came exactly four years ago to the day as the Green held Army to 29.2 percent on Jan. 4, 2006. The last team to score no more than 43 was Princeton on Feb. 23, 2007 in a 53-43 Dartmouth win. And the last time the Big Green won a game scoring less than 50 points was 13 days earlier in a 45-44 win at Princeton.
Value in Accuracy
Shooting accuracy has been an issue for the 2009-10 Big Green, shooting just 38.8 percent for the season. But they have shown what they can do when their sights are aligned properly — three times they have shot better than 40 percent, which led to their three victories.
