CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - It was deja vu for the Dartmouth and Harvard volleyball teams on Friday night. A week earlier the two teams played at Leede Arena with the Big Green coming out on top, 3-1. On Friday, the two squads played at the Malkin Athletic Center with the Big Green winning, 3-1, again.
The win improved Dartmouth to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the Ivy League. It was the first road Ivy League match for Dartmouth as it improved its win streak to three.
The Big Green took the first set, 25-20. It was a back-and-forth set that saw the Crimson play relatively mistake-free volleyball. Harvard made only two attack errors in the set, but the Dartmouth attack proved to be too much. The Big Green were relentless with 15 kills, which were spread evenly throughout the squad with four Dartmouth players having three kills each.
Dartmouth started the second set on a 12-4 run and it appeared it would run away with the set. Harvard came back strong and came within one point at 16-15. From there, the Big Green dominated the Crimson to the tune of a 9-1 run to win the set, 25-16. Dartmouth used an almost .400 hitting percentage in the set to earn the nine-point win.
Harvard controlled most of the third set and was able to pull out a 25-22 victory. The Crimson held a three-point lead at 19-16, but the Big Green came back and the two teams were tied at 21 a piece. Unfortunately for Dartmouth, Harvard won four of the last five points to win the set.
The Big Green were able to put the Crimson away in the fourth set, 25-16. Dartmouth took the lead early in the set and never let the Crimson back into it.
Junior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led the team in kills with 16 and she had five digs. Junior Kendall Houston (Austin, Texas) flirted with another triple double with six kills, eight digs and 37 assists. The other Big Green players with double-digit kills were Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.) with 11 and Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) with 10.
Dartmouth returns home for two conference matches next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 8, the Big Green hosts Cornell, game time at 7:00 pm. On Saturday, Oct. 9, Dartmouth hosts Columbia at 4:00 pm.
