The Dartmouth men's soccer team controlled much of the second half but could not break through in a tough 1-0 Ivy loss to #17 Penn.
Dartmouth (6-4-1, 1-2 Ivy) held a 9-4 shot advantage in the game and took nine corners to Penn's two, but Penn's (10-2, 3-0 Ivy) goal in the fourth minute held up for the next 86.
The Quakers were content with their advantage in the second half and let their defense do the work to hold the Big Green. Penn did not take a shot for the entire half, while Dartmouth took four.
Penn opened the game attacking and it paid off right away. The Quakers drew a free kick about 20 yards out and Christian Barreiro fired a rocket past the wall. Dartmouth keeper Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) made the diving save but the ball ricocheted off his hands and Penn's Thomas Brandt swooped in the bury the rebound far post.
Dartmouth had plenty of offensive build up in the second half, but Penn's defense only allowed four shots. The Big Green kept the ball clearly in Penn's defensive end for nearly the entire final 10 minutes.
The Big Green nearly had the equalizer in the final minute of play when Teo Larsson-Sax (Kalmar, Sweden) headed a ball off a corner from Andrew Olsen (Norwell, Mass.) but Penn's Ben Berg made the save of the game on the line to preserve the shutout.
Lucky Mkosana (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) made great runs all day and led the team with four shots.
Berg finished with two saves while Donovan made one for Dartmouth.
The Big Green has another Ivy date this Saturday, Oct. 23 at Columbia.
