CHARLESTOWN, R.I. — Entering the final round trailing the leader by three strokes, sophomore
James Pleat (Nashua, N.H.) shot a one-under 70 to tie for first at The Classic at Shelter Harbor While Pleat ultimately lost the playoff for medalist honors to Hartford's Matt Smith, he helped Dartmouth tied for the lowest team round (295) of the day and move up three spots in the team standings to tie for fifth in the inauguaral tournament held at the Shelter Harbor Golf Club (par 71, 6,695 yards).
Columbia took home the team title with a 588 (+20), nine strokes ahead of Harvard. The Big Green finished 15 strokes off the pace with a 603, trailing Penn by five strokes and Navy by two.
Pleat had the third-lowest round of the day on Sunday to enter the clubhouse at just one-over par with a 143. But Smith also finished with a 143 after shooting even par in his second round, then won the playoff. First-round leader Taylor Fontaine shot a 74 (+3) over the final 18 holes to trail the leaders by just one stroke.
Freshman Joe Mazier (Atlanta, Ga.) tied for 32nd with a 75-77—152 (+10). The co-captains, senior
Davis Mullany (Great Barrington, Mass.) and junior
Peter Williamson (Hanover, N.H.) both shot a 154 (+12) to tie for 41st, although Mullany improved eight strokes on the second day. Rounding out the scoring for the Big Green was junior
Teddy Overton (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) with a 164 (+22).
The Dartmouth men have completed their fall schedule and now await for the spring thaw to take to the links again.
