HANOVER, N.H. – With a crowd of 172 screaming fans behind her, junior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) helped her team rally in the fourth to tie the set at 24-24 but it was not enough as Brown surged ahead taking the 3-1 win in the match, capturing its first Ivy victory of the season.
The Bears (7-12, 1-6) led by as much as five late in the final set of the evening before Baird came to the line. Alissa Santa Maria (Yorba Linda, Calif.) set the stage as she served two points to bring her team to within one at 19-21 before Brown called a timeout. Coming out of the break, Baird prepared to serve with an ace coming on her first attempt followed by three errors on the Bears and a kill by Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.) as the Big Green saw the set tied at 24-all.
Unfortunately the Bears were hungry for that first league win and a kill by Brianna Williamson ended the match, giving Brown the 3-1 victory. Williamson was stellar for the visitors as she finished with 17 kills, tying her season-high as well as hitting .500 in the four sets.
Baird had 16 kills for the Big Green while freshman Elisa Scudder (Ashburn, Va.) led all scorers with 19 kills and a .607 hitting percentage. Santa Maria was tops for Dartmouth with 39 assists while Baird recorded a double-double with 13 digs as she was one of four Big Green players to have double-digits.
The Bears took the first game rather easily, 25-18 but Dartmouth rallied to take the second, 25-19. In the third set, despite taking the early lead, the Big Green was unable to overcome a Brown rally midway through, falling behind by as much as seven as the Bears won, 25-17. In the fourth, Santa Maria and Baird gave Dartmouth an early lead but again the home team could not hold on as Brown took the 26-24 victory.
The match was the Big Green's Dig Pink match as part of a national initiative with the Side-Out Foundation to fight breast cancer. Fans were given an opportunity to participate in a raffle in which all funds raised went to the Side-Out Foundation.
The Big Green (12-6, 3-4 Ivy) will be back in action on Saturday at 5 p.m. with an Ivy tilt against Yale.
