NEW YORK, N.Y. — In front of a lively crowd at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue on Sunday, Columbia University defeated the Dartmouth field hockey team, 5-2, as Gabby Kozlowski recorded a career-high four goals in the win for CU.
Columbia (9-6, 2-3 Ivy) struck first halfway through the opening half when Kozlowski intercepted a pass and went one-on-one with Big Green goalie, Jenna Stearns (Thornton, N.H.) putting the ball over the sprawled out Stearns to give the Lions a 1-0 lead at 17:41.
Dartmouth evened the score four minutes later with a goal off a straight pass on a corner by Maya Herm (Bethesda, Md.). Lisa Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) picked up the assist. Columbia answered back with a goal of its own a mere 48 seconds later.
The Lions still weren't finished as Kozlowski added to her scoring with an assist that pushed the home team's lead to two at 24:40, giving Columbia a 3-1 lead heading into the break.
Shots were close in the first half, with CU holding a slight edge, 12-9, but the Big Green had six corners compared to the Lions' one.
Columbia came out roaring in the second frame, as Kozlowski added a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to push the lead to 5-1.
Dartmouth tacked one on late in the game when Masini was able to tip a Claire Byrne (Rye, N.Y.) shot past the Columbia goalie but it wasn't enough.For the game, the Lions outshot Dartmouth, 24-20, while the Big Green held an 8-7 advantage in corners. Stearns finished with 13 saves while Christie O'Hara and Erin Conway combined for 10 for Columbia.
Dartmouth (9-6, 2-3 Ivy) returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 30, hosting Harvard for homecoming before taking on Vermont, Sunday, Oct. 31, both at Chase Field.
