HANOVER, N.H. – Lisa Masini tallied the game winner in the 75th minute of the contest, less than 6:00 into the overtime frame as the Dartmouth field hockey team defeated Harvard, 1-0 on homecoming at Chase Field.
Masini's third goal of the season helped the Big Green snap a four-game losing streak as Dartmouth captured its third Ivy win of the season and is now 9-6 overall, 3-3 in the league. Masini carried the ball into the circle, spun one way, drew the goalie to the right and put the ball into the lower left corner for the game's only score.
Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.), who picked up the lone assist in the game, had a chance to end the contest approximately a minute before Masini's goal as she had a great look at the net but her shot was saved low by Harvard goalie, Cynthia Tassopoulos. McHenry ran almost the length of the field to track the ball down and get her composure enough to put the shot on net.
Big Green netminder Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) made some terrific saves late in the second half as the Crimson (3-13, 1-4 Ivy) tried to use some momentum to snap an eight-game losing streak. The shutout is Vakiener's second of the season.
Vakiener finished with three saves while Tassopoulos had four. Dartmouth held a slim advantage in shots, 10-8 and led in corners, 8-5.
The Big Green will wrap up the home portion of its schedule on Sunday with a 2:00 pm matchup with twin-state rival, Vermont at Chase Field.
