NEW YORK, N.Y — Conference play has not been kind to the Big Green this year, and it continued on Friday when Dartmouth lost at Columbia, 3-0. It was the sixth consecutive loss and the sixth straight in conference play. It dropped the Big Green to 12-8 on the season and 3-6 in Ivy League play.
In the first, Columbia had the lead for the majority of the set. Dartmouth finally gained an advantage at 23-21, but the Lions came back to score the next three points to retake the lead. The Big Green tied the contest at 24 after a kill by senior Kelsey Johnson (Carlsbad, Calif.), but Columbia scored the last two points to win, 26-24.
The second set was all Columbia, including an 8-0 run by the Lions. The eight straight points were highlighted by three consecutive service aces by the Lions' Madeline Rumor. Dartmouth tried to respond, but didn't have enough with Columbia winning, 25-15. The third set was more of the same with the Big green falling behind early and trying to make a comeback. The Lions held a 17-11 lead, but Dartmouth came back to cut it to three, 23-20. Then, Columbia scored on a kill and a set error by the Big Green to win the match.
Junior Madeline Baird (Austin, Texas) led the team with 14 kills and 14 digs. She was the only Dartmouth player to record double-digit kills. Junior Amber Bryant (Libertyville, Ill.) led the squad with 11 digs.
The Big Green attempt to end their losing streak when they travel to Cornell on Saturday, game time 5 p.m.
