DURHAM, N.H. - The Dartmouth field hockey team took a one-goal lead on in-state rival, New Hampshire but had to come from behind in the second half to overtake the Wildcats, 4-3 on UNH's Memorial Field, Wednesday night.
Liz Blanken (Short Hills, N.J.) scored the Big Green's first penalty shot of the season, tying the contest 38:28 into the second half before Kelly Hood (Berlin, N.H.) tallied her second goal of the game to pot the go-ahead in the 45th minute of play.
Hood started the game off with a corner goal just four minutes in. Virginia Peisch (Koenigstein, Germany) pushed in with Kelly McHenry (Williamsburg, Va.) stopping the ball as Hood lifted it inside the right post.
UNH tied the game midway through the half with its own corner goal by Megan Bozek. Kerry Bracco (Hampton Falls, N.H.) from McHenry scored an unusual corner goal for the Big Green less than five minutes later as Dartmouth took the lead again. McHenry swung the ball to the top left side of the goal as Bracco shot back into the far side.
The Wildcats scored two more times, taking a 3-2 lead into the break as Dartmouth led in shots (13-10) but UNH held the lead in penalty corners (6-5).
The Big Green snapped the Wildcat's three-game winning streak and seven straight wins at home to improve to 8-2 while UNH falls to 9-4. Dartmouth has been victorious eight of the last nine meetings between the two teams.
The Big Green finished with 20 total shots to UNH's 16 while the Wildcats had 13 corners to Dartmouth's six. In goal, Meagan Vakiener (Port Murray, N.J.) recorded a season-high seven saves while Katherine Nagengast had 12 for the home team.
The Big Green will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 10 with another non-conference tilt as Dartmouth heads down I-93 to take on Boston University. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
