BOSTON — Four members of the Dartmouth football team were named to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-New England team as selected by the New England Football Writers, including junior return specialist Shawn Abuhoff, the lone repeat member from last year's squad. Joining Abuhoff on the team were senior defensive lineman Charles Bay as well as two more juniors — offensive lineman Ryan O'Neill and tailback Nick Schwieger.
The team, which represents 12 schools, will be honored at the annual New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Thursday, Dec. 9 at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham, Mass.
Abuhoff (Hialeah, Fla.) was third in the nation in punt return average at 17.2 yards while bringing back three punts for touchdowns for 41, 76 and 82 yards. No other FCS player brought back more punts for scores this season. He also averaged 26.4 yards on 22 kickoff returns, ranking 21st in the country. Last season, Abuhoff was the lone sophomore to earn a spot on the FCS All-New England team. In addition, he led the Ivy League and ranked seventh nationally in passes defended from his cornerback position, including four interceptions, while contributing 45 tackles and a forced fumble.
The Ivy League's leading rusher, Schwieger (Norton, Mass.) enjoyed one of the best seasons ever for a Big Green running back, accumulating 1,133 yards (the second most in school history) on 242 carries to lead the league in rushing for the second straight year and rank fifth nationally at 125.9 yards per game. He also ran for 14 touchdowns, tying a Dartmouth record. Schwieger was a capable receiver out of the backfield as well, catching 28 passes for 210 yards, plus tossed a 62-yard touchdown pass against Brown. Six times the tailback posted 100-yard games with a season-high of 216 at Bucknell, and also topped 160 yards in victories over Holy Cross (169) and Cornell (164). He was named the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week three times, and led the league in scoring at 9.3 points per game (84 total) and all-purpose yards (158.8 per game), ranking among the top 15 in the country in both statistical categories.
Bay (Marietta, Ga.) came on strong at the end of the season after missing most of the first three games with an injury. The defensive end finished the year with an Ivy-leading three forced fumbles and eight sacks, placing fifth among FCS defenders in forced fumbles per game and seventh in sacks per game (1.0). The senior had 33 tackles for the season, 11 going for a loss, and blocked an extra-point attempt. Against Cornell, he had three of the Big Green's team-record 10 sacks, then ended the year with a season-high 10 tackles with 1.5 sacks in a 31-0 shutout victory at Princeton.
O'Neill (Orland Park, Ill.), a 6-4, 285-pound left guard, was the anchor of the offensive line that paved the way for Schwieger to accumulate his 1,133 rushing yards. Dartmouth also yielded just seven sacks the entire season, with the per game rate (0.7) ranking seventh nationally. With protection like that, Big Green quarterback Conner Kempe was able to throw for 1,647 yards during the season, the 15th most by a Dartmouth quarterback.
No school had more selections on the team than Dartmouth, with New Hampshire equaling the Big Green total of four. Abuhoff, O'Neill and Schwieger represent three of the nine non-seniors among the 30 players on the squad. All four Big Green players were also named to the All-Ivy First Team that was announced last week. The complete team is listed below.
