Bennett Award — awarded to the offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the high degree of performance, sportsmanship and character exhibited by the captain of the 1936 football team — by the Dartmouth football coaches ... battled through an injury during the first half of the season before finally getting back into the starting lineup for the final four contests ... still managed to lead the Ivy League in forced fumbles and sacks while finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, in the FCS national rankings on a per game basis ... also led the league in tackles for a loss per game ... selected to the New England FCS All-Star Team ... first extensive action of the season came against Holy Cross as he made seven tackles with a sack and a key block of an extra-point attempt in a 27-19 victory ... also came up with a solo stop on a 4th-and-goal at the one just before the half to keep the Crusaders off the board ... picked up a sack at Columbia, forcing a fumble while the Lions were in the red zone ... collected half a sack and an assisted tackle for a loss versus Harvard, his first start of the season ... all three tackles at Cornell were sacks for a total loss of 22 yards and a forced fumble ... his sack against Brown brought about fourth down and set up a go-ahead score for the Big Green on the ensuing possession ... ended his career with a season-high 10 tackles, three for a loss, with 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble in a 31-0 whitewashing of Princeton.
JUNIOR (2009)
Earned the John M. Manley ’40 Award, given to the varsity football player who demonstrates the most improvement through his efforts in the weight room ... started in each of his eight games, all at defensive end ... sixth on the team in total tackles, but fourth in tackles per game due to missing two contests due to injury ... led the squad in both tackles for a loss and sacks ... recovered a fumble and returned it 39 yards tor a touchdown in the fourth quarter against Columbia, sealing the Big Green win ... posted a career-high 11 tackles in the season opener against Colgate ... also had a sack against the Raiders, forcing a fumble on the play ... two weeks later he dropped 10 Quakers against Penn ... also registered sacks at Yale and in the season finale versus Princeton ... forced a fumble on his sack against the Tigers ... all told had career-best 2.5 tackles for a loss against Princeton as well ... had two TFL against Colgate and Yale as well ... five solo stops at Yale are a personal best.
SOPHOMORE (2008)
Recipient of the Doten Award, which goes to the sophomore on defense who made significant contributions to the team ... started each of the 10 games at defensive end ... one of eight Big Green defenders to post at least 30 tackles on the season ... came up with four solo tackles, five total and one for a three-yard loss, against New Hampshire ... recorded a season-high six stops at Cornell with one going for a two-yard loss ... all three of his tackles against Penn held the runner for no gain ... blocked the first extra-point attempt by Yale ... also batted down an Eli pass ... had another block on a PAT the following week versus Holy Cross ... recovered a Columbia fumble in the nasty weather ... finished the season by contributing four tackles at Princeton.
FRESHMAN (2007)
Leading tackler among freshmen with 11 stops ... had three tackles against UNH and two apiece against Cornell and Princeton ... recovered a fumble against Brown.
HIGH SCHOOL
Chosen to the All-Cobb County first team ... named to the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association all-star game ... honorable-mention pick to the Georgia Class 5A all-star team by both the Associated Press and Atlanta Journal-Constitution ... helped Wheeler win first regional title since 1997 ... had offers from Elon and William & Mary.
