Buck-ing the Trend
• Dartmouth is shooting to finish out the 2010 calendar year by beating Bucknell to give the Big Green their first winning streak in 22 months, having defeated Drake in Des Moines before Christmas, 67-59.
• The victory over the Bulldogs was the first for Dartmouth over any team from the state of Iowa, and its first within the state border since 1948.
• The Green earned the win without the services of senior point guard Ronnie Dixon, who suffered a broken hand in practice the day before the game. He is expected to be out until early February.
• Junior David Rufful led the way for Dartmouth at Drake, equaling a season high with 17 points, hitting half of his shots overall (7-of-14) and from behind the arc (3-of-6).
• Making his first career start was junior Kirk Crecco, who came up one rebound shy of his first career double-double with 12 points and nine boards, plus led the team with three assists.
• Dartmouth features a balanced offensive attack with five players averaging between 7.0 and 10.2 points per game. Junior Jabari Trotter tops the team with that 10.2 ppg while hitting 18-of-37 (.486) of his three-point attempts.
Series vs. Bucknell
• Dartmouth has played the Bison just twice previously, splitting the two meetings.
• Last year, the Big Green exacted revenge against Bucknell with a 49-43 triumph — thanks to a career-high 16 points from R.J. Griffin — that was over 100 years in the making. The Bison won the initial game between the two schools, 23-12, on Feb. 27, 1905.
• That Big Green loss came in the first 20-win campaign in the program's history as Dartmouth went 20-10-1.
• Dartmouth is 74-119 against current Patriot League schools and has won each of the last three — one each against Bucknell, Colgate and Army.
Scouting the Bison
• Bucknell may be a .500 team right now at 7-7, but it has won five of its past six games, including a solid 70-59 win on the road at Loyola (Md.) on Tuesday night (where Dartmouth lost last month).
• The lone loss during the six-game span came at Boston College three days before Christmas by a mere four points, 84-80.
• Bucknell is a very solid shooting team, lighting it up from the outside at a 41.5 percent clip (100-241) and at 77.6 percent (173-223) from the charity stripe.
• Mike Muscala, a 6-11 sophomore, leads the Bison with averages of 13.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
• The Bucknell playmaker is Darryl Shazier who dishes out nearly six assists every time out with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.76.
• G.W. Boon is an excellent sixth-man off the bench, averaging 10.9 points and 3.9 rebounds.
• The Bison have a slight disadvantage on the boards, mostly due to a proclivity to yielding offensive boards — more than 10 a game.
• Dave Paulsen, who won a Division III national championship at Williams, is in his third season rebuilding at Bucknell with a record of 28-47.
Wanted for Treason by the Patriots
Dartmouth has enjoyed its recent meetings with Patriot League teams, dating back to its 49-43 win over Bucknell last year. Earlier this season, the Big Green handled Colgate, 80-63, and then knocked off Army on Dec. 11, 71-68. After this game versus the Bison, Dartmouth still has rematches with both the Raiders and the Black Knights on the road.
Iowa State of Mind
With the passing of Bob Feller in December, it was only fitting that Dartmouth got its first win in the state of Iowa since the Cleveland Indians were the reigning World Champions. Back on Dec. 30, 1948, the Big Green beat Vanderbilt in the Corn Bowl. Nearly 62 years later, Dartmouth got that second win in Iowa, defeating Drake, 67-59. The victory was also the first for the Green against a team from the state.
Ivy League RPI
Thanks to the 67-59 victory at Drake, Dartmouth was able to keep the Ivy League ahead of the Missouri Valley Conference in the RPI rankings. The MVC, which has been among the top 10 in RPI each of the past six seasons, is currently 13th. But the Ivy League is even better at 12th, and is making a run at besting its top RPI finish of 13 back in the 2001-02 season (first tracked in the 1993-94 season). The conference directly in front of the Ivy League in the rankings? Conference USA.
Crecco Cramming the Iron
In his first two years at Dartmouth, junior Kirk Crecco averaged 6.4 minutes over 41 games, scoring a total of 46 points. It took him seven games to equal his scoring total, and he has been much more efficient in his scoring as well. Now with 63 points in nine games, the 6-3 guard is leading the Big Green in shooting accuracy at 51.0 percent (25-of-49), and nearly posted a double-double in his first career start with 12 points and nine rebounds in a career-high 37 minutes against Drake.
