Final Homestand for One Senior
• Before the game Saturday against Brown, Dartmouth will honor its lone senior on the roster, captain Robby Pride.
• The Big Green got into the Ivy win column last weekend by defeating Columbia in a defensive struggle, 48-44. The victory ended a seven-game slide overall and a 10-game losing streak in league play dating back to last year.
• The Dartmouth defense was tremendous, holding the Lions to just two three-pointers in 23 attempts, or 8.7 percent. Columbia entered the game among the top 25 teams nationally in three-point accuracy
• Against league-leading Cornell, the Big Green enjoyed one of their best shooting nights of the year, hitting half of their 52 shots, including 63 percent in the second half. But the 70 points — a team high against a Division I opponent — was no match for the Big Red and their 15 threes
• The last three Ivy weekend home sweeps for Dartmouth have all come against Brown and Yale — in 2004-05, 2005-06 and last year (2008-09).
Series vs. Yale (10-17, 4-6)
• This is the 196th game played between Dartmouth and the Bulldogs. Two weeks ago, Yale won its 100th game against the Big Green and lead the all-times series, 100-95.
• The Big Green are 13-9 all-time against Yale at Leede Arena, defeating the Bulldogs here last year, 57-54.
• Dartmouth is trying to split the series for the second straight year. But over the last 19 meetings, the Bulldogs have won 16 times.
• Dartmouth played Yale in the Big Green's first varsity season, 1900-01, defeating the Elis, 22-15.
Scouting the Bulldogs
• Since defeating Dartmouth two weeks ago, Yale lost a pair of games on the road at Princeton and Penn by an average of 18 points.
• While the Bulldogs do have 10 victories, the best by RPI came three weeks ago against Columbia, who have an RPI of 247.
• Guard Alex Zampier is Yale's most prolific scorer at 17.6 points per game, which is essentially tied for the league lead. But that production comes with a price in the form of 39.5 percent field goal shooting, including 29.7 percent on threes.
• Zampier also is active on the defensive end with 2.2 steals per game, 26th nationally.
• Three Bulldogs grab at least 5.6 boards a game — Greg Mangano (5.8), Paul Nelson (5.7) and Michael Sands (5.8). Sands also pitches in 10.7 points on a nightly basis and led Yale with 20 points in the win over the Green two weeks ago.
• Yale does not rely on the three-point shot much, save for Zampier with 46 triples. As a team, the Bulldogs shoot under 30 percent from downtown.
• In the first meeting, it was Sands that did most of the offensive damage with Zampier on the bench. Sands posted 20 points and eight rebounds.
• Yale is a solid free throw shooting squad, ranking 59th nationally at 72.3 percent. Zampier leads the way at 86.2 percent, 39th in the country.
Series vs. Brown (10-17, 4-6)
• Despite losing two weeks to the Bears, Dartmouth holds the lead in the all-time series, 75-65.
• Brown hit 33-of-37 free throws two weeks ago to defeat the Big Green by a 75-60 count.
• Since Leede Arena opened in 1987, the Big Green have owned Brown in this building, winning 17 of the 22 contests.
• Over the past 10 meetings, Dartmouth and the Bears have each won five times.
• The first two games between the two schools on the hardwood came in February of 1902 with the Big Green winning both games, 70-14 and 39-20.
Scouting the Bears
• Brown is coming off an historic weekend during which it defeated both Penn and Princeton on the road for just the second time ever. The Bears are 3-2 on the road in Ivy play.
• Power forward Matt Mullery led the way with 22 points against the Quakers and 15 more against Princeton. His 15.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game easily lead the squad.
• While Mullery had 17 points and 10 boards in the last encounter with the Big Green, it was Peter Sullivan who put up the biggest numbers with 23 points and 11 caroms.
• Another solid free throw shooting squad, Brown clips the nets at 72 percent from the foul line, not to mention going 33-of-37 two weeks ago in the 75-60 win over Dartmouth.
• Sullivan and his brother, Peter, had combined for 71 three-pointers this year, but it is Garrett Leffelman who is the most accurate at 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from downtown.
• Brown doesn't send opponents to the line often, ranking fourth nationally in fewest fouls committed.
Taking Pride in Your Work
Guard Robby Pride is the lone senior on the squad, and he will be honored before the game against Brown. The two-time captain enters the weekend with 416 points, 195 rebounds, 107 assists and 71 steals in his career, to go along with a 41.4 field goal percentage and 71.4 percentage from the foul line. Over the last three seasons, he has played in all but two games and has started the last 18.
Sweet Victory is 300th
The seven-game skid came to an end with the 48-44 triumph over Columbia on Feb. 19, giving Dartmouth its 300th Ivy League victory since the conference began formal play in 1954-55. It was also the first Ivy win for interim head coach Mark Graupe and ended a 10-game losing streak in league play dating back to last season.
Second-Half Sharp-Shooting
Last weekend, Dartmouth made a concerted effort to wipe away the memory of its poor second-half shooting at Yale (18.8 percent). Against Columbia, Dartmouth went 11-of-19 (.579) from the floor to earn its first conference victory. The next night, the Big Green enjoyed its best offensive second half of the season, hitting 17-of-27 (.630) while scoring 49 points, one more than they had in the entire game versus the Lions the previous night.
Best Shooting in a Half This Season
• 17-of-27 (.630), 2nd half vs. Cornell, 2/20/10
• 15-of-24 (.625), 1st half vs. St. Francis, 1/18/10
• 16-of-26 (.615), 2nd half vs. Lyndon St., 12/13/09
• 11-of-19 (.579), 2nd half vs. Columbia, 2/19/10
• 18-of-35 (.514), 1st half vs. Lyndon St., 12/13/09
• 10-of-20 (.500), 2nd half vs. Hartford, 11/28/09
Defense Prevails Against Lions
While juniors Clive Weeden and Ronnie Dixon were providing 12 and 11 points, respectively, to help defeat Columbia, it was the defensive effort that deserves the accolades. The Lions entered the game among the top 20 teams nationally in three-point accuracy, yet the Big Green forced them to miss all but two of their 23 attempts from behind the arc. Noruwa Agho, who was one three-pointer made shy of leading the nation in percentage, was held to just 1-of-10 from long range. In addition, Dixon preserved the victory by blocking a shot — just the sixth of his career — with less than 20 seconds to play.
Dixon Blossoming Offensive Star
Since the Ivy season began, junior Ronnie Dixon has become the team's most reliable scorer, reaching double figures in seven of the 10 games. The last time on the court he delivered a career-high 20 points against Cornell, and his 11.8 scoring average in Ivy games ranks 10th in the league.
