WOODSTOCK, Ga. – The Dartmouth softball team opened its season at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech on Friday. The Big Green began the day giving up three runs in the fifth inning to Bowling Green to lose, 3-0 and in the afternoon game Liberty strung together 11 runs over the first two innings to take the victory.
Bowling Green used a three-run fifth inning to take a 3-0 victory over the Big Green to begin the day for both teams. Karmen Coffey scratched out the only run needed by walking, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, stealing third and scoring on a fielder's choice. But the Falcons added two more on a fielder's choice and Adrienne Dick plated another run with a two-out single.
BGSU pitcher Zada Lines retired the first 10 batters in order before allowing a one-out walk in the fourth to Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) but unfortunately the senior would stay at first. Another one-out walk in the fifth to Molly Khalil (Seal Beach, Calif.) gave Dartmouth another chance but two more fly outs kept the Big Green from pushing anything across. In the seventh, Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) was issued a two-out walk but a ground out to short ended the contest.
In the circle Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) went the complete game. She gave up four hits, including just one extra-base hit while striking out three batters.
In the second game Liberty scored four runs in the first and then tallied seven in the second to take an 11-0 victory. All the runs in the second were unearned for pitcher Kat Hicks (Templeton, Calif.). In the fourth frame Dartmouth began to hit the ball and put players on base as Yee and Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) began the inning with back-to-back singles. Then in the fifth Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) was able to record another hit but it was too little too late as the game ended after the Big Green batted.
On Saturday Dartmouth will be back in action with games against Western Carolina at 4:00 and then Georgia State at 6:00.
