PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Ronnie Dixon poured in 18 points for Dartmouth while Robby Pride finished his career with 17 in his final game, but Penn proved to be too much on its home floor, defeating the Big Green at The Palestra on Saturday night, 78-68. Jack Eggleston posted a double-double with a career-high 25 points and 11 rebounds for the Quakers (6-21, 5-8 Ivy), while Dartmouth (5-23, 1-13 Ivy) finished the season on a five-game slide.
Penn point guard Zack Rosen contributed 18 points on the strength of four three-pointers in five attempts, while Dan Monckton and Mike Howlett came off the bench to score 14 and 10 points, respectively. As a team, Penn shot 52.1 percent for the game (25-of-48) and 81.5 percent from the line (22-of-27).
The Quakers jumped out to 10-2 lead to start the game as Rob Belcore and Rosen each drained a triple. Freshman R.J. Griffin and Pride responded with three-pointers of their own to get Dartmouth back within four at 12-8.
Another Rosen triftecta gave Penn its first 10-point lead of the game at 18-8. From that point for the rest of the night, the differential rarely strayed from six to 12 points. The closest the Big Green got was four points at 31-27 when Pride canned a three-pointer with 4:26 left in the half, but Rosen immediately hit a jumper and Eggleston converted a three-point play.
Eggleston proved to be difficult to stop in the opening stanza as his 19 points accounted for nearly half of Penn's 40 points. Dartmouth trailed by six as Dixon posted 11 of the Green's 34 points in the half.
After the intermission, Penn extended its lead to as many as 13 when Monckton stole the ball and took it to the hole for a 50-37 lead. Dixon came back with a three-pointer for the Big Green.
While Howlett was sinking all four of his foul shots on two trips to the line, Dartmouth got a tip-in from Dixon and a 16-footer from Griffin to keep the deficit at 10. Pride and Howlett traded layups, then Dixon canned two free throws and sophomore Jabari Trotter scored a bucket to get the Big Green back within six at 56-50.
A Monckton three-pointer kept Dartmouth at arm's length, and the Green did not get within six again until 1:11 remained on the clock and freshman Mbiyimoh Ghogomu got his second of three straight baskets. But that would be as close as they could come to the Quakers.
