WOODSTOCK, Ga. – Dartmouth softball wrapped up play at the Buzz Classic on Sunday with two games. The Big Green began the morning dropping a hard-fought, 8-5 contest to Winthrop before losing to host Georgia Tech, 8-1. Dartmouth is now 1-5 on the season. Rookie Hillary Hubert (Grant Park, Ill.) was named to the All-Tournament team as she hit a blistering .538 in the six games.
In the opening game against Winthrop, Dartmouth took a two run-lead after the first but dropped the contest, 8-5.
In the opening frame Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) began the day with a walk before moving over on a single by Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.). Another single by Leigha Clarkson (Perris, Calif.) brought Costello home as she advanced to second. An error allowed Alyssa Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) to reach base as Clarkson moved to third and then came home on a flyout by Hubert.
In the second Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) walked and got all the way to third after Costello reached base on an error but the two would stay stranded and second and third as Dartmouth was unable to get any more runs.
Singles by Hubert and Evan Gray (Edmond, Okla.) in the third continued to add to the Big Green's hit totals but no more runs came across as Dartmouth held on tenaciously to its 2-0 lead.
Winthrop finally got on the board in the fourth with three runs off three straight hits. Costello got another hit with a double in the bottom of the frame but three straight outs left her at second as the Big Green found itself behind for the first time in the game.
In the fifth another extra-base hit gave the Eagles another run but back-to-back doubles by Parker and Hubert brought Parker around as Dartmouth cut into Winthrop's lead and kept the hot bats going. In the Big Green's half of the sixth a home run by Ramirez tied the game at 4-4 before singles by Parker, Hubert and a double by Audrey Kolodziej (Morton Grove, Ill.) plated another as Dartmouth took the lead back.
The Eagles would not go away however as another run came across for Winthrop in the seventh and the game was tied yet again. Unfortunately the Big Green had no answer in the bottom half of the inning, as all three batters were struck down in order. The Eagles took the lead back in the eighth with three unanwered runs as Dartmouth again went down in the order to close the game out.
In the circle Gray went the complete game with six runs and two strikeouts. For Winthrop, two pitchers combined for the win as the Eagles were able to get seven strikeouts on the day.
In the Big Green's final game of the tournament a home run by Parker was the only run Dartmouth was able to plate as the senior continued to be a bright spot for the Big Green but Georgia Tech proved too tough as the Yellow Jackets strung together runs in the first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the host team went 5-0 in its own tourney.
Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) took the loss for Dartmouth as she went all seven innings with seven earned runs and four strikeouts.
The Big Green continues on the road starting March 18, traveling to Florida for its annual Spring Trip. Dartmouth opens up at home on April 9 with an Ivy League doubleheader against Columbia.
