CLEARWATER, Fla. – With a three-run fifth inning, Long Island University defeated the Dartmouth softball team, 3-0 Thursday in Florida. Pitcher Hillary Barker (Duvall, Wash.) had her first shutout of the season going through the first four innings.
LIU's Blaire Porter held the Big Green to just two hits while striking out nine. Christy Autin (Harwood Heights, Ill.) and Noelle Ramirez (Pompton Plains, N.J.) each recorded hits in the sixth and seventh innings but it wasn't enough.
Dartmouth did not have its first runner on base until the fourth when Kirsten Costello (Windsor, N.Y.) led off with a walk before Nikki Yee (Martinez, Calif.) reached on a fielders choice sac bunt. Both runners advanced but would stay stranded as the Big Green was unable to get the early lead.
The Blackbirds broke through in the fifth when a lead off single followed by an error and back-to-back singles plated two earned and one unearned run as the visitors took the 3-0 lead.
Barker went the complete game in the circle with two strikeouts while Porter struck out nine for LIU. Dartmouth fell to 1-6 on the season while Long Island improved to 9-10.
The Big Green now hits the tournament circuit with five games in the University of South Florida Tournament in Tampa, Fla., starting on Friday.
